OASYS User Peter Verhulst (matthiola) has released a set of 69 Combis with LH bass and RH leads, along with KARMA Grooves.

Thanks Peter! I'll let him tell you about it:

Tweaking and fine tuning combis is an ongoing process. Since the release of the first "Groove01" set I've spent many hours improving these combis, fixing imperfections along the way. Now, all combis have been reworked, some beyond recognition! The combi set uses all EXis and EXs data, including LAC-1 programs! You need to load EXs1 and EXs2.

In this new collection contains 69 new combis! You'll find a lot of jazzy, soul groove style bass splits. You'll hear lots of funky stage pianos, screaming organs, vintage FX and deep bass spiced with mostly 'natural' drum grooves. These combis were designed for practising left hand bass and of course for inspiration and fun! Most combis are Karmafied, though generally pretty basic. Most of the time there's only one GE groove running. The more comprehensive stuff is usually derived from a factory preset. In case a combi is close to a factory preset, I've preserved the filename, just adding a "2" in the name.

NOTES:
The combis are located in user bank U-G.
When loading this data, please make sure you don't overwrite your own PCG data!
All combis use factory preset programs in their default locations.
This includes LAC-1 (U-D bank) and "Richard Devine" banks (U-B and U-C).
For convenience I‚ve copied the factory programs in the Groove02.PCG.
These combis will not work properly with the "producer" load set.

You may use these combis free of charge! I hope the grooves inspire you to make cool music. I would be very happy if more users share their custom combis.
Meanwhile, Happy Grooving!

Regards,
Peter Verhulst

I just downloaded both the Devine LAC-1 files and the Groove2 files and am having a problem with the Groove2 set. Both sets of files downloaded and unstuffed into "Devine.pcg" and "Groove02.pcg" files (along with accompanying text). I burned these to a CD (using Toast on a MacBook Pro, OS 10.4.8) and tried to load them into the Oasys. The Devine.pcg file loaded correctly. However, the folder containg the Groove02.pcg appeared to be empty. I checked the cd in the Mac and the folder in fact contains a file named Groove02.pcg however this file does not show up on the Oasys.

Additionally, even though both files (Devine and Groove) both are tagged ".pcg" they are different type files. A "Get Info" command reveals that the Devine.pcg file is a "document" file and the Groove02 file is and "executable unix file". The Devine file is 2 MB and the Groove is 7.9 MB. Furthermore the icon for the Devine file is the generic "page with turned down corner" icon while the Groove02 icon is a gray computer screen with the word "exec" in green in the upper left corner. This is the first time I've ever run across that particular file type icon on a mac. (I can send pics of these icon images if necessary).

I repeated the process downloading the Groove02 file a second time to a USB drive and tried that with the same results.

Anyone have any ideas on what I'm doing wrong or what the "executable unix file" is.

Hi Burton,
I wish I could tell you what you are doing wrong, but I can't, because I just downloaded the above file onto my Mac running OSX 10.3.9, it automatically unzipped into a folder, the Groove02.pcg is shown as a generic document, I copied it onto a USB thumb drive, and it shows up perfectly normal in my OASYS, I can load it, etc.

What are you using to unzip it? I think my system just used the default Mac BOM unzipper thingee.

I'm using the default Mac technology as well. This is a brand new MacBook Pro, so it's my first experience with the Intel Macs (we have several of them in our photo retoucing studio but this is the first Intel laptop and my first time with music applications). However, I did both the Devine files and the Groove02 files at the same time and the Devine files were fine. That doesn't prove anything, just that the native Mac utility worked at least once. My older computer is a 17" Powerbook G4 at 1.67Ghz. I'll try that as well as using Stuffit on the Groove file and see if that gets me anywhere.

Thanks for your input and sorry about putting the other question in the wrong place.

I just tried downloading the Groove2 zip file on the Intel Mac and forced it to open with Stuffit. Same results. I then downloaded the same file on the older Mac Powerbook laptop (G4 also running OS 10.4.8) and let the generic Mac utility unstuff it. Same result. Although I'm not at the Oasys to try to load these files, I'm sure they won't work. Both the new files still show up as 7.9meg "Executable Unix File(s)" with that strange computer screen icon. If I knew how to post a picture to the forum I would send a screen grab of the folder contents and icon. But I'm new to this style forum and haven't played with that feature yet.

What is also interesting is that while the files (on either machine) are downloading they show a file size of approximately 1 meg, which is about what I would expect. However, when they unstuff (via either method) they show up as 7.9 meg files. They are invisible to the Oasys. Strange. Could someone send me this file via direct e-mail. I just have no clue what's going on. I could also send the 7.9 meg file to anyone who could shed some light on this.

Thanks

Things just get stranger and stranger with this Groove02 file. I downloaded the file on a Windows XP laptop and used the Windows unzip utility to unstuff the file. I then put that on a USB drive.

I put that drive into my Mac to check the file type and lo and behold it showed up as "Oasys PCG file". Just to check myself I took a look at the one of the Groove02 files I had priviously downloaded to the Mac and that file type now reads as an Oasys PCG file. I checked all three versions of the Groove02 that I had downloaded on the Intel Mac in my various tests and now they ALL read as Oasys PCG files with a standard Mac document icon. Earlier today and all through yesterday they had all consistently shown as "Unix Executable file(s)".

I'm not at the Oasys, but I suspect they'll all work now. Very odd. Anyone have any idea of what might be going on. The Groove02 file that is still on my old G4 laptop still reads as the Unix Ececutable file but all of the ones on the new machine now read as Oasys pcg files.

To complicate the issue even more, I just plugged the USB drive into the old Mac and ALL of the pcg files on that drive (even Kevin Nolan's UG0106_1.PCG file) show up on the G4 laptop as Unix Executable files. However if I plug that drive into the new Mac all those files read as Oasys PCG files. As a historical note, I've downloaded other pcg files in the past on the old G4 laptop with no problems as well as the Oasys OS updates.

There's something odd going on. Any ideas.

Stephen,

I have copied all LAC-1 sounds from Richard Devine and Oasys has set up all of them and combis automatically in some user banks...

Do you think if I try to copy now the combis from Peter Verhulst, Oasys will delete the ones of Mr. Devine???

How can I make sure I do not overwrite any other user banks??

Thanks.

Peter,

Your combis are great! Perfect, as you say, for jamming. But also great just to find some basic rhythms for further tweaking in new projects. I know, they don't have the complexity of the factory Combis, but there are times when you just need to start with something simple.

Many thanks for these - keep at it!

Peter: Thank you for sharing these Combi's. They are coming in real handy for some of my song writing. They are a great starting point. I add different drum mixes and or bass sounds to complement the keys or lead component and I'm off and running.

Best Regards, Nitecrawler
