Has anybody successfully swapped out their stock SD card for a larger one yet? I know it's been talked about and we have confirmation now that the new M3 ships with a 1GB card (with room to put the expansions on there which eliminates the need for the USB stick).
If nobody's done it yet, I'm going to try it tonight. I don't see any point in throwing a 2GB in it (yet) so I'm going to slap a good 'ol 1GB Sandisk in it. I'll take pictures throughout the process. Assuming this works, you can buy a high speed SD card to speed up loading times. And if it doesn't cost much more, might as well put the 2GB in I guess.
Cross your fingers...

I have not heard anything about 'confirmation' but that sounds great.
I hope you have a smooth changeover to the bigger SD card.
I'm just wondering if you guys speaking of SD cards you mean Secure Digital Cards as used as a storage medium for e.g. digital cameras?
Is this inside our units as a memory device?
I would guess KORG is using ordinary RAM modules.
BTW: Today I asked the German KORG guys and they confirmed (as Jerry did before) that there are NO M3XPANDED which ship with larger internal memory. They were polite and asked their Japanese friends and they also confirmed that there are no other hardware versions than that one which already shipped since the introduction of the unit. Nor do they intend to change the hardware layout.
So, I'm a little bit confused cause jmexio told us something different about his M3-88 unit.

On the Korg Forums, he posted a picture from a page in his manual that confirms that his M3 contains all the expansions in internal memory (i.e. the SD card). That would not be possible without a larger SD card. He also confirmed that the card is 1gig. Even if that were not true, others have confirmed that copying one of the expansions to the standard SD card will load automatically without a USB device plugged in.
So either way, it's time someone confirms once and for all. I also have free time tonight and a complete set of tools.

I think the benefits of the proposed proceedure would be great but I will mention the caveat of possible warrenty invalidation by working in areas of the m3 not intended for user intervention.

Well, I have absolutely no idea as to why Korg still insists that there is no upgrade to the internal memory.
I guess it's my word against theirs now, and I am sure you would all believe in Korg more than in some guy from the internet...
On the other hand, I posted pictures of the extra manual page, and my M3 booting and loading the piano with nothing plugged in...
I *think* the piano could be loaded into the old card, so it could be I am just trying to pull a hoax, but if that is true, I sure went into a lot of trouble fabricating the manual page and translating it into french, german and (I think) japanese.
It is *possible* that since this is such a minor upgrade, not everyone at Korg is aware of this. This is not a change in the hardware layout or anything like that, just changing one "revision" of the card for another. As they make new units, they buy more components, now they just integrated a larger card.
Cheers!
PS: Regarding the upgrade, someone had soldered a USB drive and posted pictures, if I recall correctly... Someone remembers about this?

Likely it's because there is a large amount of stock in warehouses around the world that does not have the larger card, and is NOT going to get the larger card. I'm guessing...
My thoughts also Stephen, but I prefer to say that they probably don't know.
After all, that is a possibility... (altough a bit of a strange one!!)
I don't know if it is worth mentioning, but I actually wanted my USB drive, as I was sure it was going to work with the M3 (my USB drive has issues, I probably need to buy a new one) and also I assumed it would have a Korg logo on it to brag with my friends. Now I have to drag them to my studio if I want to impress them....
I have found this document posted here at the forum some time ago. It looks it is not a standard SD card inside of the M3. Granted, it is not the clearest of views, so maybe I am wrong and it is standard... Take this into consideration before opening your unit/voiding warranty!
I merely verified what the SD card was formatted in Fat16.
So I grabbed a 1GB Sandisk out of my camera and it was also Fat16. I deleted the stuff off of it, copied the contents from the stock 256MB card onto the 1 GB card. I also copied the 4 expansions into the root and powered it up.
The M3 loaded perfectly and loaded all expansions automatically.
It took me longer to get the M3 module off and on from the keybed then it did to remove all the screws, swap cards and put it back together.
This is about a 10 minute job from complete start to finish.
Thanks Korg for making these things expandable and upgradeable. And sorry Jerry for encouraging a mass of people to tear these things open.
ROCK ON!!!

Just to clarify, I guess you also have the EXBM256 memory expansion in there as well? - as far as I know, just installing a larger SD with the 4 KEP files in the root directory won't actually allow someone to load all 4 on startup, without actually having the EXBM256.
