All Funked Up 86 BPM - 4/4 Hip-Hop/Funk Lead Synth
hand diagram
This energetic groove with a touch of swing feel stradles the stylistic boundaries of both Funk and Hip-Hop, with a solid Hip-Hop drum groove, a fat synth bass (with added slap bass interwoven in some scenes), a rhythmic comping clav part, a plucky muted guitar line, and a wah-wah synth guitar. The Fill button provides a complimentary snare and toms fill with a number of different swing and triplet-based variations in the scenes.

As typical in KARMA-land, the LH area provides chord input and a soft pad layer. The mono synth lead (with fingered portamento) has two different "flavors" (hip-hop and progressive), controlled by A.Sw2, which changes the envelopes, drops it an octave, and adds a third element up a fifth. The eight scenes provide quite an array of completely different variations, some of them making good use of the Master Layer Rhythm Multipliers, with a bending slap bass taking center stage in Scene 2.

Motif Arps/Special Notes
  • Two Motif arps can be added as additional elements: a harpsi riff on pads 9-12 and a mono synth octaves riff on pads 13-16, both of which are provided in various ascending scale steps and shut each other off, in addition to being stopped by a scene change.
  • Most of the Tone 1 knobs have been dedicated to the RH synth lead - Attack and Release are especially useful when A.Sw2 is in the on position.
  • A.Sw1 increases the level of reverb on the Drums.

Scenes (Master) Description
Scene 1 (simplest) - minimal activity on all parts, suitable for a breakdown or intro, with triangle and congas, slap bass accents, back-beat keys chord, simple mute guitar line, sparse wah-wah chords; triplet snare and toms fill with tight buzzy delays ending in vibraslap
Scene 2 (simpler) - picks up with introduction of the kick and hi-hats, while the bending slap bass takes center stage and the other parts get funkier; pitch-bending snare and toms fill
Scene 3 (simpler) - activity kicks up a notch, with a half-time variation on the bass and drums (which brings in the sidestick), muted guitar gets busier while the keys double up on the back-beats and the wah pans around energetically; triplet randomized snare and toms fill
Scene 4 (simpler) - in comes the snare, for another half-time drum variation, the bass goes to full time with slap accents, an interesting cyclic keys variation, wah guitar pans across the stereo field at the end of the phrase, muted guitar uses melodic repeats; syncopated snare and toms fill
Scene 5 (startup) - the basic full groove, funky, open and energetic; syncopated snare and toms fill
Scene 6 (busier) - kicks up the groove with a syncopated backbeat variation on the drums and bass, a busier angular muted guitar, wah guitar variation, comping keys part; busier snare and toms fill
Scene 7 (busier) - the drums move from the hi-hat to the ride, and everything picks up with new funky variations, slap bass accents, wah guitar cuts phrase in half, comping keys variation; pitch-bending snare and toms fill
Scene 8 (busiest) - the drums get syncopated, they keys jump up an octave, bass line adds extra notes, mute guitar uses a melodic repeat variation and the wah guitar "gets down" - and the fill takes off as well with a double-speed triplets variation!
