Chart Climber 72 BPM - 4/4 Pop/R&B Strings
hand diagram
This contemporary Pop/R&B Performance features an infectuous KARMA-generated piano arpeggio and resonant filtered gated synth part with panning on center stage. Underneath, a solid analog 808 style drum groove with claps melds with a simple kick-accentuating synth bass pattern using a bright, resonant analog synth sound, and a busy staccato analog synth pattern produced by one of KARMA's polyphonic Arp Model GE's. The Fill button triggers a suitable matching analog drum fill with different variations in the scenes.

The LH/KARMA area provides a simple analog string pad, while the RH area provides a hybrid orchestral/analog string sound for melody lines. A.Sw1 adds an octave down element to the RH strings voice, while A.Sw2 changes the timbre of it somewhat. Since pitch-bending and vibrato are not really suitable for the RH sound, the pitch-bend and mod wheels do other useful things - check them out!

A.Sw2 changes timbre/sound)

Motif Arps/Special Notes
  • Two Motif arps can be added as additional elements: Pads 9 to 12 trigger a simple gated filter sweep rhythm, while Pads 13 to 16 trigger a square wave synth riff - both of which have ascending scale steps based on the last-played chord and can be layered on top of each other.
  • Master Layer Switch 5 (Note Trigger Mode) Controls whether the Bass, Gated Synth and Piano restart their phrases when new chords are played, or continue from the current position. Try it with Scene 3 and play a new chord every few beats to understand the difference.
  • When not in Remote Mode (i.e. in Song Mode), Tone 1 Knob 8 adds an interesting beat-synchronized delay effect to the Drums, Bass, Synth Riff, Piano and Fill.

Scenes (Master) Description
Scene 1 (simplest) - minimal activity on all parts, suitable for an intro or breakdown, simple shakers, single root bass notes, with high-octave gated synth chords, a plucky synth riff, and a sparse piano melody; very sparse buzzy delay drum fill ending in vibraslap
Scene 2 (simpler) - analog percussion added, bass plays short octave notes, a cascading synth arpeggio variation takes center stage, variation on the sparse piano melody, open gated chords panning left and right; sparse pitch-bend fill
Scene 3 (simpler) - hi-hats are added to the percussion, heavy bass stabs that alternated with fat chords on the synth riff and gated synth give this scene a majestic flavor, along with a melodic variation in the piano riff; panning toms and snare fill
Scene 4 (simpler) - the kick, sidestick and ride come in, along with more percussion, bass plays a syncopated spitting riff, gated synth picks up, piano opens up and the synth riff plays an occasional phrase with space; cool pitch bending ascending analog-tom fill w/delays
Scene 5 (simpler) - in comes a noise-snare for a more solid beat, a syncopated stabbing bass line, busier piano melody, more activity on the synths, and a triplet snare and toms fill
Scene 6 (startup) - the basic full groove - solid, bouncy, ready for a vocal; straight analog snare and toms fill
Scene 7 (busier) - the drums pick up with a more syncopated beat and additional percussion and so does the bass, while the synth riff and piano melody choose new cyclic variations, alternating gated synth with space; syncopated panning snare and toms fill
Scene 8 (busiest) - 32nd notes on the piano plays off a bouncing ascending synth riff, arpeggiated pitch-bending on the drums, bass stays on one note, high-octave for the gated synth; wild panning 32nd-note drum fill
