Ethnolo-G 88 BPM - 4/4 Hip-Hop/World Lead Synth
hand diagram
Hip-Hop with an ethnic/world flavor, this Performance features a pitch-bent ethnic santur riff, a distorted synth stab, heavy sub-octave bass, piano riffs, and a hip-hop drum and percussion groove. A sine wave portamento-ish synth riff slides into the groove at various points. The Fill button triggers an agressive fill with a number of different variations shown in the scenes.

A very rude n' nasty mono sync lead with fingered portamento has been provided in the RH area for soloing, while a subtle synth pad is provided in the LH area. A.Sw1 raises the octave of the RH lead, while A.Sw2 lengthens the release of the synth stab from Module 4. The eight scenes provide a wide variety of different mixes and variations – and check out the cool pitch-bending drums in the "breakdown" of Scene 1 - that's also a great scene to experiment with the two Motif arps on Chord Triggers 9 to 12 and 13 to 16.

Motif Arps/Special Notes
  • Two Motif arps can be added as additional elements: Pads 9 to 12 trigger an ethnic plucked riff, while Pads 13 to 16 trigger a distorted wah guitar riff with FX - both of which have ascending scale steps based on the last-played chord and can be layered on top of each other.
  • The pitch-bent santur and distorted synth stab may seem like two separate "instruments", but they are being generated by the same tricky GE, using key zoning and transposition to keep the notes for each part as wide apart as possible to prevent overlaps. In the Motif song, two different voices/parts are assigned to the same MIDI channel. Try soloing Module 4 (which is assigned to the GE being discussed), then watch the Activity Display in the Real-Time Controls page (or Data Display page) to see where the parts are being generated.

Scenes (Master) Description
Scene 1 (breakdown) - arpeggiated pitch-bending on the drums and sparse activity in other parts makes an interesting break for a song; the "noodling" on the piano plays nicely off of the short-duration randomized synth riff; pitch-bending syncopated snare/toms fill with delays
Scene 2 (simplest) - minimal activity on most parts, with the focus on the santur riff, and the waterfall of sound provided by the synth riff; sparse snare and toms fill ending in vibraslap
Scene 3 (simpler) - drums move to the ride, percussion takes center stage, the piano tinkles, and the synth riff interjects long bends; pitch-bending snare/hi-hat/kick fill
Scene 4 (simpler) - the sidestick adds to the rides, the piano starts a figure, bass ascends on offbeats, the synth stab does an ascending riff while the santur drops out, the synth riff does a short-duration descending figure; panning snare and toms fill with long delays
Scene 5 (simpler) - an alternate syncopated groove with a different kick and bending snare, suitable for a breakdown, echoing high piano notes, cascading downwards synth riff; cool short-delays fill effect
Scene 6 (startup) - the basic full groove; heavy snare/hi-hats/kick fill
Scene 7 (busier) - the piano opens up, while the other parts get more syncopated, choppy stabs, synth riff becomes more scalic in nature; syncopated snare and toms fill
Scene 8 (busiest) - high level of activity on all parts, more syncopation, piano plays an interesting compling pattern, swooping bends on the synth riff; syncopated snare and toms fill
