This R&B love song Performance consists of a half-time analog drum machine groove featuring hand-claps, a simple resonant synth-bass pattern that accentuates the kick drum, a gated synth pattern that pans left and right in the stereo field, an analog synth simulating pizzicato strings drenched in delay, and a simple piano/pad layer melody giving it a certain romantic flavor. The Fill button triggers a matching analog drum kit fill with some interesting variations in the scenes.

The LH/KARMA area provides a simple e.piano, while the RH lead is a mellow monophonic R&B synth lead. A.Sw2 adds a second oscillator to the lead down a fourth and brightens it slighty - and the Performance is set to store that setting in the scenes - you will find that it is on in the odd-numbered scenes, and off in the even-numbered scenes. A.Sw1 modulates the filters and envelopes of the Bass and Gated Synth, giving each scene an alternate variation if desired - although this setting is not stored in the scenes - you could turn on the "Assignable Switch 1 in Scene" button in the Real-Time Control Editor to do so.

Motif Arps/Special Notes
  • Two Motif arps can be added as additional elements: Pads 9 to 12 trigger a percolating sine wave pattern, and Pads 13 to 16 trigger a trancey synth riff, both in various scale steps, which can be layered on top of each other and stopped with a scene change (or the usual Chord Trigger latching/unlatching features.)
  • Master Layer Switch 3 can be used to turn on/off the +2 transposition of the Gated Synth in the fourth bar - some scenes use it, some scenes don't.

Scenes (Master) Description
Scene 1 (simplest) - shaker, simple bass, single piano chord, arpeggiated synth riff, simple gated pattern; high-pitched panning fill with slow delays
Scene 2 (simpler) - adds hi-hat, bass doubles up, the piano takes the focus with a cascading riff while the synth pattern alternates a simple root/fifth ostinato; panning toms and snare fill
Scene 3 (simpler) - adds kick and handclaps; bass opens up but adds bending, synth riff plays a reggae-like chord pattern, gated synth alternates octaves, piano plays a variation of the startup scene; snare and toms fill with slow delays
Scene 4 (startup) - the basic full groove; straight analog drum kit fill
Scene 5 (busier) - adds clave and triangle percussion, bass gets funkier, gated synth extends its durations, piano plays a variation of the startup scene; busier syncopated snare and toms fill
