Hot Nights in Havana 107 BPM - 6/4 Latin Brass
hand diagram
This energetic Latin-flavored Performance in 6/4 features a highly dynamic drum and bass rhythm, along with a driving piano phrase. A bossa-nova style nylon guitar with realistic human randomizations plays off the piano, and a variable marimba/mallets phrase is added in some of the other scenes (but is muted in the startup scene). The Fill button triggers a combination drums and percussion fill - in the Module 6 Control Layer, Switch 1 controls the drum fill, while Switch 2 controls the perc fill - generally they are layered in most scenes, but can be individually muted for just drums or percussion - Scene 1 has just the percussion, for example, while Scene 2 has just the Drums.

A warm analog synth pad is provided in the LH/KARMA area, while two different soloing experiences are provided in the RH area courtesy of A.Sw2: a polyphonic octaves brass section with a hint of sforzando for melody lines, and a mono chiffy ethnic flute for ripping some jazzy solos. In this Performance, the A.Switches are not set to be stored in the scenes, so they can be freely toggled on and off at any time without scene changes affecting them. Most of the scenes are rather busy in this Performance, with some improvisational variations (Scenes 7 and 8); try muting some parts if you feel there's too much going on - it's better to have the choices!

Right Hand: Octave brass section (poly) (A.Sw2 = off)

Motif Arps/Special Notes
  • Pads 9 to 12 trigger a Motif arp brass riff to add to the mix, in the usual fashion for most Performances. Pads 13 to 16 operate a little differently in this one: they trigger a one-shot organ chord gliss that does not loop, so you'll only hear it once when you trigger it. However, the cool thing is that since the pads are latched, each time you play a new chord in the LH area of the keyboard (or Pads 1 to 8), the organ chord will retrigger according to the new chord. As long as you leave it latched, each new chord you play will get an organ chord/gliss.
  • A.Sw1 activates harmonics on the Bass and a brightening of the Guitar EQ for an additional tonal variation (not stored in scenes).
  • When not in Remote Mode (i.e. Song Mode), Tone 1 Knob 8 adds a beat-synchronized delay effect to most parts including the RH lead sounds.
  • MOX only: Due to the MOX having only 64 notes of polyphony (the MOXF, XS, and XF have 128 notes), you may notice polyphony issues with this Performance depending on how it is played (especially when latching both Motif arps at the same time).

Scenes (Master) Description
Scene 1 (simplest) - suitable for a breakdown from some of the busier scenes, drums go to the sidestick and hi-hat, piano and mallets trade-off, guitar plays short single note phrases; percussion fill only
Scene 2 (simpler) - drums on the sidestick and ride, mallets take the focus, piano sits it out while the guitar does some simple comping; drums fill only
Scene 3 (simpler) - fuller drum groove, funkier bass line, piano does simple comping, mallets play an insistent in-your-face riff, guitar comps on one chord; drums and perc fill
Scene 4 (simpler) - drums on the snare and ride, bass pattern same as startup, piano does backbeat comping, mallets again take the focus with a cascading variation, upbeat guitar comping; drums and perc fill
Scene 5 (startup) - the basic full groove (mallets muted); drum and perc fill
Scene 6 (busiest) - adds in the mallets, kicks up the activity a bit on the drums and percussion, drums go to the ride; drum and perc fill
Scene 7 (improv break 1) - the guitar goes into an improvisational randomized melody line/solo, while the other parts open up to provide more space; busy drum and perc fill
Scene 8 (improv break 2) - the bass takes off into an improvisational randomized solo, while the other parts open up; fast 32nd note drums and perc fill
