Motor City Redux 132 BPM - 4/4 Motown Brass
hand diagram
This up-tempo Motown Performance presents a very traditional take on this music genre, consisting of a typical kick-heavy Motown drum groove with tambourine and tom roll, a kick accentuating Motown bass line which has electric bass guitar and piano bass notes playing in unison, a typical Motown electric guitar strum which accents the snare, a laid-back comping acoustic piano pattern and a vibraphone phrase playing mainly octaves (in the startup scene) to add to the authentication of this genre. The Fill button provides a useful alternate fill with many variations in the scenes.

A sax/brass layer is provided in the right hand area of the keyboard for melody lines, while a different brass section is provided in the LH/KARMA area, with octave down on A.Sw2 - and listen out for Scene 7 which begins to veer very slightly into 70's Rock/Pop territory, while Scene 8 is a complete departure into outer space (just because we can!)
Left Hand: Brass section with decay
Right Hand: Sax and brass big band
(A.Sw2 = octave down)
Split Points: * B2/C3
Motif Arps/Special Notes
  • Two Motif arps can be added as additional elements: Pads 9 to 12 trigger a sax ensemble riff, while Pads 13 to 16 trigger a sparse jazz organ (wait for it) - both of which have ascending scale steps based on the last-played chord and can be layered on top of each other.
  • A.Sw1 can be used to raise the Bass line up an octave; you could store it in the scenes by turning on the "Assignable Switch in Scenes" checkbox under A.Sw1 in the RTC page.

Scenes (Master) Description
Scene 1 (simplest) - just a backbeat tambourine, pickup bass notes, simple piano and vibes, guitar hit on 4; sparse bending fill ending with a belltree
Scene 2 (simpler) - kick and tambourine pattern, snare or tom turnaround after 8, simple bass, piano and vibes with guitar still on 4; sparse fill with delays
Scene 3 (simpler) - open variation with kick, tambourine and handclaps, simple short piano and vibe chords suitable for a verse; straight ahead fill
Scene 4 (startup) - the basic full groove, straight ahead fill - name your favorite Motown hit!
Scene 5 (busier) - bongos and percussion added to the drums, the bass plays a classic Motown variation, piano, guitar and vibes get busier; busier syncopated Motown fill
Scene 6 (busier) - drums move to rides, congas and tambourine, bass stays on the root, guitar plays an upbeat busier variation, vibes jump up an octave; fast 16ths toms and snare fill
Scene 7 (busiest) - more open variation that begins to move into pop/rock territory with simple vibe octaves, piano moving from root to 2nd chords and the guitar accenting offbeat; panning drum fill
Scene 8 (breakdown/space-out) - just because we can, this scene goes into outer space, and far away from Detroit - with arpeggiated pitch-bending drums and percussion, clusters on the vibes bending octaves, bending bass and even bending piano; "flying" pitch-bending triplets drum fill
