Songwriter's Canvas 86 BPM - 4/4 Pop/Rock Guitar/Plucked
hand diagram
This mid-tempo Pop/Rock shuffle Performance emulates the sound of six musicians (including you!) playing live in a rehearsal room or studio, providing you with a kind of "Pop Song Sketchpad" as an aid to songwriting and composition. It consists of a solid standard 4/4 pop drum groove which has a subtle random groove in start-up Scene 4, a busy, funkified fingered bass pattern, a strummed acoustic guitar pattern (whose realism and subtle randomizations are just another example of the power of KARMA!), a heavily-chorused electric guitar arpeggio with random notes panned left, and a simple comping Wurlitzer piano pattern panned right. The Fill button triggers a suitable matching drum fill, with different variations in some of the scenes.

You can choose to solo with a distorted lead guitar or perc organ using A.Sw2, while A.Sw1 raises the bass an octave and mutes the strings on the guitars for an alternate sound. The 8 scenes build from extremely simple with a beautiful downward E.Gtr arpeggio in Scene 1 to wild and crazy in Scene 8, with many useful variations in between, including the fills - and listen out for Scene 7 for some extra funk and a wild triplet drum fill!
Left Hand: Jazzy organ
Right Hand: Distorted lead guitar (A.Sw2 = off)
Perc organ w/rotary speaker (A.Sw2 = on)
Split Points: * B2/C3
Motif Arps/Special Notes
  • Pads 9 to 12 provide a cyclic Motif arp synth riff in ascending scale steps, while Pads 13 to 16 provide a latched guitar power chord in four different scale steps - both based on the last-played chord. The guitar chords are latched, so once the button is on, playing new chords on the keyboard or with the first eight Chord Triggers will retrigger the guitar chord.
  • A.Sw1 modulates multiple parameters on the voices for the Bass and two Guitars, creating an alternate tonal variation, while A.Sw2 selects between lead guitar or perc organ for the RH.
  • Use the sustain (hold) pedal to latch the LH organ if desired, so you can use the bend wheel for the RH lead guitar, or control the rotary speaker speed on the RH organ with the mod wheel.

Scenes (Master) Description
Scene 1 (simplest) - a nice descending e.guitar line, with minimal activity on the other modules - suitable for a breakdown or intro; fill ends with bell-tree
Scene 2 (simpler) - the energy picks up, with a tambourine, some chord stabs on the e.piano, and new variations for the bass and a.gtr; fill with vibraslap
Scene 3 (simpler) - in comes the kick, the bass gets funkier, the acoustic guitar chops more, and more stabs on the piano - also makes a good intro
Scene 4 (startup) - the basic groove; straight snare and toms fill - go ahead, write a song!
Scene 5 (busier) - the energy picks up from the startup scene, with the e.guitar cutting its phrase in half, the a.guitar and e.piano chopping up the comping a bit more, while the bass drops down to hold steady on a single note and the drums/perc get more syncopated; straight snare and toms fill
Scene 6 (busier-open) - things get more "open" with the drums moving to the sidestick and rides, congas, clave and triangles, a descending e.guitar line off of a ninth, simple comping on piano an a.guitar; syncopated snare and toms fill
Scene 7 (busier) - the snare comes back in with open hi-hat and subtle randomizations, an open 5-9 riff on the e.guitar, syncopated strumming on a.guitar, an echoing e.piano part, and a funkier bass line - and check out the wild triplet fill
Scene 8 (busiest) - cool arpeggiated pitch bend with repeated notes on a half-time drums/perc variation, comping on the a.guitar, a descending e.guitar line reminiscent of scene 1, and some stabbing piano chords make this very unique - and check out the panning fill with tight delays
