Tape-Head Techno 113 BPM - 4/4 Techno/Electro Lead Synth
hand diagram
This up-tempo double drum-kit, Techno/Electro Performance features a Mellotron tape strings voice in the left hand area of the keyboard for a contrast of the "old & new" in music technology (hence the title). It also features a double helping of KARMA Wave-sequencing to good effect. The solid and modern sounding drum groove is made up from two seperate drum patterns working in parallel (Drums 1 & Drums 2), the first featuring some quirky percussive effects and the second having more traditional type hand percussion. Layered on top are a dynamic, distorted FM type synth-bass pattern, a busy KARMA Wave-sequence pattern (WaveSeq 1) and a second, less busy KARMA Wave-sequence pattern with more space (WaveSeq 2). Both of them can produce a whole range of cool variations, especially using Master Layer Slider 8 (Wavesequence Offset) which can select between 127 different sets of 16 wavesamples for both Wavesequence patterns at the same time! A syncopated snare and old-style analog syn-drum toms fill with some delay effect is triggered by the Fill button, with multiple variations in the scenes.

An aggressive Techno/Trance style mono synth lead is provided in the right hand area of the keyboard for soloing, but it can be switched to a thin funky reso-synth with A.Sw2 - and the Performance is set to store the lead selection in the scene, so Scenes 1 to 3 have the thin reso-lead. Furthermore, the LH tape strings pad can have a resonant filter sweep added using A.Sw1 - this is also stored in the scenes and is on in Scenes 1 and 2.
Left Hand: Tape strings (mellotron)
(A.Sw1 = filter sweep)
Right Hand: Trance lead (mono) (A.Sw2 = off)
Thin funky lead (mono) (A.Sw2 = on)

Motif Arps/Special Notes
  • A single Motif arp is utilized in this Performance: Pads 9 to 12 provide an additional vocoderish techno phrase, while Pads 13 to 16 feature synth stab hits (both in ascending scale steps based on the last-played chord and useful for adding to the mix).
  • If you hold down one of Pads 13 to 16 (try 13, for example), each time you play new chord in the LH area of the keyboard or use Pads 1 to 8, a new stab hit matching the chord and scale step 5 will be triggered.

Scenes (Master) Description
Scene 1 (simplest) - infectious interweaving wave-sequencing patterns with a simple shaker, occasional bass notes, LH tape strings has filter sweep, RH lead is the thin funky synth; high-pitched bending syn-toms fill
Scene 2 (simpler) - the drums add some percussion noises and hi-hat, the wave-sequencing patterns change to brighter waveforms; high-pitched bending syn-toms fill ending with a kick
Scene 3 (simpler) - kick is added to the perc, hi-hats and sfx, wave-sequencing patterns change variations, LH tape strings lose the filter sweep; heavy syn-toms fill
Scene 4 (startup) - the basic full groove, RH lead is trance lead; syncopated snare and syn-toms fill
Scene 5 (busier) - drums increase activity, bass adds octave jumps, wave-seq 1 jumps up an octave; panning syn-toms fill
Scene 6 (busier) - snare-noise added to drums, syncopated bass pattern, different angular wave-sequencing patterns; busier snare and syn-toms fill
Scene 7 (busiest) - drums change to the ride cymbal and more activity, another octave bass variation, wave-sequencing patterns with some sync waves; heavy syn-toms fill with slow delays
Scene 8 (heavy half-time) - very cool (we think) variation using some of the Rhythm Multiplier switches in the Master Layer; bass with some bend; nice wave-sequencing and a super-fast fill with rapid delays
