The Acid Test 131 BPM - 4/4 Acid/Trance Lead Synth
hand diagram
This up tempo Acid/Trance Performance features a typical 909 analog drum groove (use Drums Layer slider 3 "Note Randomize" to introduce claps and open hats, or Master Layer Slider 2 "Rhythm Complexity", which does the same thing and affects the activity of the Bass as well), a bouncing 303 pulse bass pattern, a pitch-bending 303 saw wave synth riff and two different gated synth patterns - the first being a bright staccato string-synth pattern and the second, a more mellow analog pad stab. Module 6 provides a variety of drum fills on the Fill button, from the standard machine gun crescendo fills to electronic toms with pitch-bending. Slow filter LFOs add an interesting dimension of movement to several of the parts.

A fast synth pad is provided in the LH/KARMA input area, while A.Sw1 changes the RH mono synth lead from a fat analog octave moog sound to a triangle lead (for great contrast) – try switching between the two while "trading phrases". Note that this Performance is set to store the A.Sw1 setting in the scenes, so the triangle lead is selected in Scenes 1 & 2 (the softer, simpler scenes). A.Sw2 activates a tempo-syncronized delay effect on the drums, that is not stored in the scenes - switch it in any time.
Left Hand: Fast synth pad
Right Hand: Fat moog octave lead (A.Sw1 = off)
Thin tri-wave lead (A.Sw1 = on)
Split Points: * B2/C3
Motif Arps/Special Notes
  • Two Motif arps can be added as additional elements: Pads 9 to 12 trigger a percussive wood-block like trance attack riff, while Pads 13 to 16 trigger a sharp metallic ascending dance riff - both of which have ascending scale steps based on the last-played chord and shut each other off, courtesy of the Chord Trigger exclusives - try alternating between them, for example, Pad 9 and Pad 13. In this Performance, the end of the fill has also been set to turn off any running Motif arps.
  • Try using the Master Layer "Rhythm Multiplier" switches to easily create many additional variations.

Scenes (Master) Description
Scene 1 (simplest) - minimal activity with the exception of the featured synth riff arpeggio, simple shakers, single bass note every bar, simple gated synths, triangle RH lead sound; pitch-bending toms fill ending in a zap
Scene 2 (simpler) - energy picks up a bit on all parts, suitable for an intro or break - hi-hats added, syncopated two-note bass, ascending synth riff, percolating gated synths, triangle RH lead sound; a different pitch-bending tom fill variation with repeats
Scene 3 (simpler) - in comes the kick drum, backbeat hi-hat, with more activity on the two gated synths, the bass and the throbbing single-note synth riff, lead sound changes to the moog lead; panning 16th-note toms fill ending with a vibraslap
Scene 4 (startup) - the basic full groove, moog RH lead, machine gun snare fill - electribes and 303's, anyone?
Scene 5 (busier) - the drums and especially bass kick it up a notch, while the synth riff jumps to a higher variation and the gated synths choose new variations; machine-gun snare variation with 32nds on the fill
Scene 6 (busier) - more energy, drums to ride and stick, lower pitched driving synth riff, bass line to an angular syncopated variation, gated synth 2 takes a higher melody part; the machine-gun snare fill from the previous two scenes adds a pitch bend envelope
Scene 7 (busier) - the drums open up a bit, dropping out the snare, but everything else starts pumping more in unison - suitable for a bridge or climax; busy 16ths and 32nds toms fill
Scene 8 (busiest/breakdown) - arpeggiated pitch-bending on the drums, long heavy bending bass notes, low synth riff cycling arpeggios with space, cool stabs on the gated synths, and a super-fast snare fill
