The Funk that Hopped 101 BPM - 4/4 Hip-Hop/Funk Keyboard
hand diagram
This funky, syncopated mid tempo Hip-Hop Performance consists of a lively drum groove with an off beat snare, a solid synth-bass pattern that accentuates the beat, a subtle muted guitar pattern panned left, a simple analog synth riff panned right and a highly rhythmic, choppy filtered gated synth pattern that auto-pans across the stereo spectrum courtesy of a slow-moving KARMA pan pattern. The Fill button triggers a suitably syncopated funky snare/kick/hi-hat or snare and toms fill with different variations in the scenes.

An ethereal decaying synth vocal pad is provided in the LH while inputting KARMA chords, and a funky chorused electric piano is provided for soloing in the RH, with the mod wheel bringing in more of a flanging effect. As always, the scenes build from simpler to more complex with some very interesting variations such as the addictive pitch-bending percussion in Scene 2 and the arpeggiated pitch-bend drum breakdown in Scene 8.

Motif Arps/Special Notes
  • Pads 9 to 12 and 13 to 16 have two different wah* guitar patterns (Motif arps) for injecting at various points, in ascending scale steps based on the last played chord. They all turn each other off (exclusive), and the end of a fill or a scene change will also unlatch them. (*no "wah" on MOX version due to only 3 IFX.)
  • The five Rhythm Multiplier switches in the Master Layer are largely unused in the scenes but can provide many additional variations.
  • A.Sw1 activates a filter sweep on the LH pad; A.Sw2 modulates the filter cutoff and resonance on the Gated Synth (Module 4) - note that the settings of A.Sw2 have been set to be stored in the scenes (it's on in scenes 7 and 8) while the settings of A.Sw1 are not. This is controlled by the "Assignable Switches In Scenes" checkboxes beneath the A. Switch settings in the Real-Time Control page.

Scenes (Master) Description
Scene 1 (simplest) - minimal activity on all parts, perfect for a funky breakdown and e.piano solo, simple echoing shakers, single bass notes, wide open muted guitar, pulsing quarter note gated synth, periodic synth riff; panning pitch-bending snare/hi-hats/kick fill
Scene 2 (simpler) - adds a cool pitch-bending conga part, glides on the gated synth, brings up the activity a bit with more bass notes and 16th notes mute guitar phrases with open space, syncopated randomized panning pitch-bending snare and toms fill ending in vibraslap
Scene 3 (simpler) - in comes the solid kick drum and tambourine, building up the energy, bass gets a little busier, everything gets a bit funkier and more syncopated; syncopated randomized panning pitch-bending snare and toms fill
Scene 4 (startup) - the basic full groove, solid snare/hi-hat/kick fill
Scene 5 (busier) - all parts pick up the pace and the groove starts cookin', different percussion, faster gating on the synth, muted guitar doubles up a bit, synth riff adds notes; syncopated randomized snare and toms fill
Scene 6 (busier) - groove gets more syncopated, drums to sidestick and rides, muted guitar really picks up, more percussion, bass plays a variation with less space, synth riff does a phrase with longer climbing notes; busier syncopated randomized snare and toms fill
Scene 7 (busiest) - picks up even more energy from the previous scene, with different kick and snare sounds, 8th note panning gated synth; synth riff plays a dynamic higher phrase; panning syncopated snare and toms fill
Scene 8 (breakdown) - all parts open up some space for arpeggiated pitch-bending on the drums, heavy bending bass line, bending the gated synth stabs and punctuating high notes of the synth riff; panning snare and toms fill with tight delays
