This mid-tempo R&B/Pop/Rock style Performance gives a definite nod in the direction of solo artist Seal and his producer Trevor Horn's sophisticated, atmospheric collaborations during the 90's. It features a funky R&B drum groove with off-beat snare and muted/open triangle, a rhythmic muted electric bass pattern which works well with the drums, a wurlitzer electric piano sound driven by Module 3's "Melodic Repeat" RTC Model (MR1) for chord/note repetitions in real time, in this case producing the one-shot transposed chord echos heard in startup Scene 4, a mellow, atmospheric gated synth pattern with a slow moving KARMA generated filter sweep and a square-wave synth arpeggio which periodically weaves its way across the stereo field (also with KARMA generated filter sweep). The Fill button triggers a metallic Trance/Techno flavored synth riff (instead of the more usual drum fill) - which mutes Module 5's arpeggio for the duration.

A polyphonic acoustic piano/string layer is provided in the RH area for soloing, which can be changed to a mono square wave synth lead by A.Sw2 for a completely different feel - you'll find it is stored as the synth lead in Scene 7. A.Sw1 kicks it down an octave when you want to get into the lower ranges. The LH area provides an evocative, swelling motion synth pad - and listen out for the sci-fi percussive effects heard in Scenes 7 and 8!

Motif Arps/Special Notes
  • Two Motif arps can be added as additional elements: Pads 9 to 12 trigger a rhythmic metallic dance riff, while Pads 13 to 16 trigger an evocative nylon guitar pattern - both of which have ascending scale steps based on the last-played chord and can be layered on top of each other.
  • Assignable Switch 2 changes the RH sound from a piano/string layer to a mono square wave lead w/portamento. This is accomplished by having two different parts/tracks set up for the RH area in the Motif Song, on different MIDI Channels, and configuring KARMA's Dynamic MIDI Page and Perf RTP Page to change the MIDI Channel by A.Sw2. Also, since the "Assignable Switch In Scenes" checkbox is on under A.Switch 2 in the Real-Time Controls Editor, this setting is stored in the scenes.
  • Module 3 (E.Piano) is driven by a different type of GE - a "Real-Time Melodic Repeat" RTC Model. This type of GE works differently and only generates notes when you play a chord, and they then melodically repeat and fade out, depending on the scene settings. So this module does not keep looping, like the others. If you trigger a fill or use stutter/retrigger, it will retrigger with the last-played chord.
  • Tone 1 Knob 8 (when not in Remote Mode) can be used to add a beat-synchronized delay effect to the drums.

Scene 1 (simplest) - pitch-bending tambourine and hi-hat, simple bass, single e.piano note melodic-repeating downwards, quarter-note gated synth, full-time arpeggio that weaves left and right while opening/closing the filter; fill-riff plays stabs with space
Scene 2 (simpler) - variation on pitch-bending perc, single e.piano note now repeats upwards, busier syncopated gated synth, octaves arpeggio variation; dotted-eight fill-riff stabs
Scene 3 (simpler) - a simplified version of Scene 4, with the repeats turned off on the e.piano so that it only plays the first chord, the arpeggio plays a random note pattern full-time (fading in and out), half-time gated synth variation very slowly opens the filter; fill-riff stab variation
Scene 4 (startup) - the basic full groove; Switch 5 in the Master Layer makes the arpeggio alternate with bars of silence, so it is not on full-time
