This Performance began life as an attempt to emulate the vibe of the laid-back, jazzy fade-out of the Beatles classic "Magical Mystery Tour" – a groove featuring random piano flourishes of chords and notes over a mellow drum and bass groove. Of course, KARMA scenes tend to have a mind of their own, and with the addition of arpeggiated chorused guitar and a drifting gated synth, the 8 Scenes have ended up going way beyond the original idea into variations suitable for smooth contemporary jazz. Try building from Scene 1 to Scene 2, then to Scene 4 and 5, then to Scene 6 and 7 for a radical departure, then to Scene 8 for the whole ensemble to rock out, then back to Scene 1. The Fill button provides a nice complimentary snare and toms fill with some different variations in the scenes, and Master Layer Slider 8 can be used to vary the randomized occurrence of toms vs. snares in the fill.

The LH/KARMA input area provides a lush layered vocal-synth pad, with A.Sw1 transposing one of the layers up an octave, while the RH area provides two different monophonic acoustic instrument voices for jazzy solos controlled by A.Sw2: a breathy alto sax, and a soft jazz trumpet, both with some chorus and delay.

Motif Arps/Special Notes
  • Two Motif arps can be added as additional elements: Pads 9 to 12 trigger a trancey riff with filter modulation that drifts in and out and Pads 13 to 16 trigger an echoing ascending chord - both of which have ascending scale steps based on the last-played chord and shut each other off, courtesy of the Chord Trigger exclusives - try alternating between them, for example, Pad 9 and Pad 13.
  • With KARMA Off, the LH pad and RH sax or trumpet provide a nice duo for soloing, or providing an introspective intro.
  • MOX only: Due to the MOX having only 64 notes of polyphony (the MOXF, XS, and XF have 128 notes), you may notice polyphony issues with this Performance depending on how it is played.

Scenes (Master) Description
Scene 1 (simplest) - jazzy breakdown, with ride cymbals and kick, a cool bending sinuous bass-line, ascending piano chords, wide-open guitar part with a strummed chord, gated synth muted; straight snare and toms fill
Scene 2 (simpler) - builds up a bit from Scene 1, drums bring in sidestick, gated synth is introduced with a slow pattern interspersed with bends; straight snare and toms fill
Scene 3 (simpler) - a "straighter" version of the basic full groove in Scene 4, with 8th notes gated synth instead of 16ths, other parts slightly simplified; triplet eighth-notes drum fill (warning - trigger on downbeat!)
Scene 4 (startup) - the basic full groove; straight snare and toms fill
Scene 5 (busier) - takes up the energy a notch from Scene 4, with busier drums with randomization, additional percussion, the bass gets funkier, the guitar and piano get more active, gated pad continues drifting over everything; slightly busier snare and toms fill
Scene 6 (busier) - a completely different variation, intended as a radical break from the other scenes, drums go to sidestick and hi-hat with woodblock percussion, short comping chords on the piano, short durations on the bass and guitar, octaves on gated synth; 16th-note snare and toms fill
Scene 7 (busier) - takes up the energy a notch from Scene 6, becoming more "solid" with the introduction of the snare, additional percusion, more solid comping piano, echoing guitar phrase; fast triplets snare and toms fill
Scene 8 (busiest) - a full-on aural assault as all instruments crank it out - use to wind up a jam before returning to a simpler scene, with the drums and perc really cranking, a pseudo walking-bass line, comping piano chords, short duration guitar notes; fast triplets snare fill (Master Slider 8 at 0)
