Alicia's Piano 98 BPM - 4/4 R&B/Contemporary Strings
hand diagram
This mid-tempo contemporary R&B Performance is influenced by R&B artist Alicia Keys' piano-driven R&B/Pop style. It consists of a claps heavy R&B drum groove with claps starting on the downbeat, a simple percussive organ-bass pattern which works well with the drum groove, a highly rhythmic comping synth pattern with velocity controlled filter which creates a slight vocoder-style effect, an atmospheric melodic piano phrase which acts as the main focus of the Performance and a busy gated polysynth pattern which compliments the comping vocoder-style synth. The Fill button provides an electronic snare and synth toms fill with many different variations as shown in the various scenes. It also has been specially programmed to play a kick at the end with whatever cymbal crash or hit is selected, since the drum groove has no kick on the downbeat.

The LH/KARMA input area provides a resonant filter sweep synth pad (latched by the sustain pedal of course), while two different lead line experiences for the RH are provided courtesy of A.Sw2: an analog strings voice reminiscent of a 70's string-machine that can be played polyphonically (A.Sw2 = off), and a phaser-effected mono dance lead (A.Sw2 = on). Additionally, be sure to check out how A.Sw1 creates a radical tonal variation for the organ bass. in fact, it's stored in the on position in Scenes 2 and 8, courtesy of the "Assignable Switches In Senes" checkbox under A.Sw1 in the Real-Time Controls Editor.

Motif Arps/Special Notes
  • Two Motif arps can be added as additional elements: Pads 9 to 12 trigger an electric rhythm guitar pattern (panned slightly left), while Pads 13 to 16 trigger a staccato polysynth arpeggio (panned slightly right) - both of which have ascending scale steps based on the last-played chord and can be layered on top of each other.
  • If you'd like the two different lead sounds to be stored in the scenes, turn on the "Assignable Switches In Scenes" checkbox under A.Sw2 in the Real-Time Controls Editor.

Scenes (Master) Description
Scene 1 (simplest) - a simple percussion ensemble and a long downwards bending bass note, the synth bounces ona single note, the piano plays sparse melodic tones, while the gated synth takes focus with a wide-voiced gating chord; sparse electronic fill with tight repeats ending in vibroslap
Scene 2 (simpler) - claves, shakers and tambourine, double stacatto bass notes (with A.Sw1 activated for a reverb and tonal variation), simple dyads on the piano, very sparse stabs on the gated synth, while the synth part takes the focus with a chattering vocder-like riff; high-pitched electronic drum fill with loose repeats
Scene 3 (simpler) - drums go to the sidestick and rides, bass gets a little busier, the synth gets simpler, the gated synth does a simple chopping chord while the piano takes the focus with a 16th-note ostinato pattern; simple and sparse electornic snare and toms fill
Scene 4 (simpler) - a variation of the startup scene, with the kick removed leaving the claps, the bass and other parts doing somewhat simplified version of their opening lines for an overall variation with more space; syncopated synth toms and electronic snare fill;
Scene 5 (startup) - the overall main groove, with the catchy iconic piano riff, clap-heavy drum groove and tambourine, solid bass line with open space, percolating gated chords on the synth and gated synth; syncopated synth toms and electronic snare fill
Scene 6 (busier) - drums do a more syncopated variation and add congas while the bass fills in the open spaces with a steady syncopated single note, the piano does a variation of the original line with harmony while the synth and gated synth change to alternate rhythms; busy panning synth toms and electronic snare fill
Scene 7 (busier) - drums go back to the main groove and add a bunch of percussion, the bass adds pitch-bending while the piano does an interesting hammer-bending variation (solo it), the synth plays a 5ths motif with some quick bending, the gated synth jumps octaves also with bending; 8th-note triplet panning electronic synth and toms fill
Scene 8 (breakdown) - a wild and whacky half-time breakdown with a lot of strange percussive noises on the drums and perc, a very heavy pitch-bending bass line (with A.Sw1 activated to change the tone and add reverb), simple stabs on the piano and gated synth with bends and a chattering synth part; fast panning 16th-note triplet synth toms fill
