Barbed-Wire Brain 73 BPM - 4/4 Dub-Step Lead Splits
hand diagram
This slow tempo Dub-Step Performance features an aggressive "wobble-bass" which dominates and underpins the entire performance (so called because of the wobble or "wub-wub" effect caused by the rapid and rhythmic opening/closing of the filter to create a an effect similar to gating). You'll find a heavy half-time drum groove with KARMA pitch-bending and record scratches, the previously mentioned "wobble bass" (traditionally used in a lot of Dub-Step), a staccato, morse-code like synth pattern driving a resonant filter-swept synth timbre (Synth 1), an aggressive overdriven 303 type synth pattern with KARMA panning which is subdued in startup Scene 5 (Synth 2), and a second distorted/overdriven synth with more of a rhythmically sparse pattern (Synth 3). The Fill button triggers a rapid panning machine-gun snare fill with pitch bend in most scenes that plays on top of the existing drum groove, with some other variations provided as well. While we won't tell you what chords you can play, this style doesn't sound particularly good with anything but minor chords - which is what you'll find on the first eight Chord Triggers.

The LH/KARMA Input area features a metallic stab layered with a fade-in synth pad and a heavy "explosion blast" sound effect created by a custom voice with pitch-stretched crash cymbal. Two different mono synth leads are provided in the right hand span of the keyboard for soloing, controlled by A.Sw2: a harmonically rich "dirty" sync-lead timbre with wild mod-wheel vibrato (A.Sw2 = off) and an analog fifths lead with a touch of distortion* in the IFX (A.Sw2 = on). A.Sw1 kicks them both up an octave for an extended soloing range. You'll find that the odd-numbered scenes call up the sync-lead, while the even-numbered scenes call up the fifths lead - courtesy of the "Assignable Switches In Scenes" checkbox. *No distortion on MOX version due to IFX limitations.

Motif Arps/Special Notes
  • Two Motif arps can be added as additional elements: Pads 9 to 12 trigger a staccato techno-synth pattern (panned left), while Pads 13 to 16 trigger a busy baroque strings pattern (panned right) - both of which have ascending scale steps based on the last-played chord and can be layered on top of each other.
  • You can store which lead sound you want to use in each scene because the "Assignable Switches In Scenes" checkbox is on under A.Sw2 in the Real-Time Controls Editor.

Scenes (Master) Description
Scene 1 (simplest) - perc noises with arpeggiated pitch bend, wobble bass plays a more melodic line for 4 beats with 4 beats of silence, with sparse notes on the three synths parts filling in the space; panning triplets tom fill
Scene 2 (simpler) - perc and tambourine variation, wobble bass variation for 4 beats with 4 beats of silence, in which synth 1 creates a swirling tornado of notes and synths 2 and 3 provide sporadic accent notes; triplets snare fill with descending pitch bend
Scene 3 (simpler) - addition of heavy kick and record scratches; yet another wobble bass variation with 4 beats of silence, synth 1 bounces with a morse code pattern, longer notes and bend on synth 2, while synth 3 plays a line with some higher notes; syncopated snare and toms fill variation
Scene 4 (simpler) - addition of sidestick, wobble bass from startup scene but with 4 beats of silence, more activity on synths 1 and 2, while synth 3 takes the focus with a hypnotic repetitive motif; syncopated snare fill with pan and looping upwards pitch-bend envelope
Scene 5 (startup) - heavy hip-hop groove and very evil-sounding wobble bass, dancing synth 1 particles, panning synth 2 overdrive line, heavy distorted synth 3 sporadic notes; fast triplets snare fill with pan and looping upwards pitch-bend envelope
Scene 6 (busier) - picks up the energy with more percussion and offbeat snare noise, wobble bass variation, galloping synth 1 pattern, bending and gliding synth 2 part, synth 3 up an oactave; fast triplets snare fill with pan and looping upwards pitch-bend envelope
Scene 7 (busier) - drums move to the ride bell, syncopated wobble bass variation with choppy holes in the pattern, synth 1 with extra repeats, synth 2 with bending and gliding notes, longer sustained notes on synth 3; machine gun snare fill with pan and looping upwards pitch-bend envelope
Scene 8 (busiest) - all out sonic mayhem with arpeggiated pitch bend on drums and noises, busy wobble bass patter with high notes, synth 1 with pitch-bend and sustained notes, morse code synth 2 left and right, pitch-bending notes on synth 3; machine gun snare fill with pan and looping downwards pitch-bend envelope
