Bounce 'n' Sway 88 BPM - 4/4 Pop/Hip-Hop Woodwind/Reed
hand diagram
This mild-mannered yet quirky mid-tempo Pop Performance with a mild, bouncy Hip-Hop feel is surpisingly addictive to jam with! A Hip-Hop shuffle groove with congas and shakers and a simple straight 8ths synth bass pattern with a mellow, rounded tone provide the foundation. On top, a rhythmic, comping synth pattern (Synth 1) with velocity-controlled wavesample-switching effects in the voice, a simple comping acoustic piano pattern and a rhythmic muted analog saw synth pattern (Synth 2), again with velocity-controlled wavesample-switching effects in the voice provide plenty of activity and variation. The Fill button provides a complimentary drum fill with some different configurations of kick, snare and hi-hat or toms in the various scenes.

The LH/KARMA area provides a piano/string pad layer (use sustain pedal to latch), while the RH provides two completely different soloing experiences, controlled by A.Sw2: a soprano sax that you can play polyphonically, and a swelling monophonic analog synth lead with fingered portamento. You'll find that the odd-numbered scenes call up the soprano sax, while the even-numbered scenes call up the synth lead - courtesy of the "Assignable Switches In Scenes" checkbox.
Left Hand: Piano/string pad
Right Hand: Soprano sax (poly) (A.Sw2 = off)
Synth lead (mono) (A.Sw2 = on)

Motif Arps/Special Notes
  • One Motif arp can be added as an additional element: Pads 9 to 12 trigger a Motif arp playing a bouncy synth riff, in different scale steps based on the last played chord, while Pads 13 to 16 trigger record scratches.
  • When using the RH soprano sax lead sound, activating the ribbon (if available on your Yamaha) to the far right adds and "endless tape-loop delay" effect.
  • You can store which lead sound you want to use in each scene because the "Assignable Switches In Scenes" checkbox is on under A.Sw2 in the Real-Time Controls Editor.

A. Switch 1:     x             86 Modulates the filter cutoff and resonance on Synth 1, while simultaneously transposing the RH lead sound down an octave
A. Switch 2:               x   87 Switches the RH lead between two different sounds (stored in scenes):
off = soprano sax (poly), on = synth lead (mono)
Ribbon:               x   22 Affects the two RH lead sounds as follows:
soprano sax: when far right, activates an "endless delay loop" (not available on MOX)
lead synth: modulates the filter cutoff frequency
Damper:             x     64 Latches the LH piano/string pad
Scenes (Master) Description
Scene 1 (simplest) - an echoing shakers pattern with tight delays, a single bass note every 8 beats, synth 1 panning simple chords left and right, synth 2 plays sparse single notes, piano plays dotted-eighth root-fifth-octave; panning high-pitched snare and toms fill with tight delays ending in vibraslap
Scene 2 (simpler) - picks up a little with hi-hat and shaker, extra bass notes, piano takes the focus with an eighth-note ostinato, while synth 1 and synth 2 play sparse arpeggiated notes left and right; panning syncopated high-pitched snare and toms fill ending with a kick
Scene 3 (simpler) - kick is added to the hi-hat and shaker, bass figure doubles up, synth 2 takes the focus with bouncing panning chords while synth 1 and the piano provide arpeggiated single note patterns; panning syncopated pitch-bending downwards snare and toms fill ending with a ride cymbal
Scene 4 (simpler) - picks up a bit with the addition of a tambourine on the back-beat and subtly randomized congas and kick, the bass gets more syncopated, while synth 1, synth 2 and the piano get busier and start to approach the startup scene; panning pitch-bending snare, kick and hi-hat fill
Scene 5 (startup) - the basic full groove with bouncy hip-hop drums and percussion, straight eighths bass; solid snare, kick and hi-hat fill
Scene 6 (busier) - the drums switch to a busier groove with a different kick/snare, the bass gets funkier, the piano starts adding some octave jumps to the chords, while synth 1 and synth 2 play left and right notes and chords; busy triplet snare and toms fill with a slight upwards pitch-bend
Scene 7 (busiest) - the drums go to the ride cymbal and choose a different percussion pattern, the bass adds syncopated octaves, the piano adds more bouncing octave chords, while synth 1 does a bouncing bending chord pattern with an occasional "shimmer" and synth 2 jumps up an octave; stuttering triplets kick and snare drum fill that pans and bends downwards
Scene 8 (breakdown) - completely opens up with a half-time drum groove with arpeggiated pitch-bending, long pitch-bending notes on the bass, panning and bending chords on synth 1 and synth 2, and a bending single note piano line; heavily swung snare and toms fill with looping pitch-bend
