Cluster Funk 104 BPM - 4/4 Funk/Pop Woodwind/Reed
hand diagram
This mid-tempo Funk/Pop performance with a high degree of shuffle features a busy slap-bass pattern that brings back memories of the 80's (when this style of bass guitar playing was very popular). It consists of a dynamic funk shuffle drum groove with tambourine, shaker and tight funk snare, the previously mentioned funky slap-bass pattern, a funky brass stab pattern playing clusters of notes with subtle note and rhythm randomization, a suitably traditional funky rhythm guitar pattern panned left and a staccato suitcase electric piano pattern with subtle rhythm randomization panned right. The Fill button provides a suitably matched funk-kit drum and percussion fill with a wide range of variations in the scenes.

The LH/KARMA area provides an acoustic piano layered with a phaser-effected* string pad, while the RH provides two completely different voices for soloing and comping: a legato alto-sax (mono) which can be changed to a funky R&B organ (poly) using A.Sw2, while A.Sw1 drops down the octave that you are soloing in. In this Performance, the A.Switches are not set to be stored in the scenes, so they can be freely toggled on and off at any time without scene changes affecting them - so you'll find the alto-sax lead in all scenes.
Left Hand: Piano/strings layer with phaser*
*Not on MOX version due to IFX limits
Right Hand: Legato alto sax (mono) (A.Sw 2 = off)
R&B organ (poly) (A.Sw2 = on)
Split Points: * B2/C3
Motif Arps/Special Notes
  • Three different additional elements can be added in this Performance: Two Motif arps can be added as additional elements: Pad 9 triggers a funky organ riff, while Pads 13 to 16 trigger a resonant clav synth riff with ascending scale steps based on the last-played chord, which can be layered on top of each other. Furthermore, Pads 10, 11 and 12 trigger three different Filter Sweep sound effects for additional variations.
  • If you'd like the scene changes to change the lead sound, turn on the "Assignable Switches In Scenes" checkbox under A.Sw2 in the Real-Time Controls page.

Scenes (Master) Description
Scene 1 (simplest) - conga pattern only, octaves on the slap-bass, sparse chords on the guitar, single notes on the brass, while the e.piano takes the focus with a busy comping part; high-pitched snare and toms fill with tight repeats
Scene 2 (simpler) - simple tambourine and shaker, a bit busier on the bass, different single notes phrase for the brass, while the e.piano switches to an arpeggiated pattern and the guitar takes focus with a busier comping strum; swinging snare and toms fill with panning and pitch-bend envelope
Scene 3 (simpler) - bring in the kick and hi-hats, while the bass plays a new three-octaves pattern, the brass begins stabbing chords, the guitar plays open chords, and the e.piano comps in a higher octave; panning snare and toms fill with pitch-bending
Scene 4 (simpler) - brings in the snare for a simplified version of the start up groove on the drums and bass, while the guiatr and e.piano play a bit simpler than the startup scene; straight snare and toms fill
Scene 5 (startup) - the basic full groove, drums on hi-hats, busy slap-bass line, comping on guitar, e.pno and brass; straight snare and toms fill
Scene 6 (busier) - drums move to the ride cymbal, percussion adds cowbell, bass line variation, busier comping on guitar, while e.piano opens up more space, variatioon on brass stabs; syncopated snare and toms fill
Scene 7 (busier/breakdown) - drums substitute claps for snare and open up, allowing the slap-bass to take center stage, while the other parts provide a more open comping feel; snare and toms fill with panning
Scene 8 (busiest) - drums move to the ride cymball bell, and add a busy conga pattern, with another busy bass line variation, while the guitar and e.piano jump to a higher inversion, punctuated by the brass stabs; snare and toms fill with panning and rising pitch-bend envelope
