Cut the funk up! 88 BPM - 4/4 Funk/Rock/Pop Guitar/Plucked
hand diagram
This mid-tempo Funk-Rock/Pop Performance features a modern slant in the form of a "cutting" gated wah guitar which serves to highlight the versatility of KARMA's Gated Model GE's. It consists of a simple but solid acoustic drum groove with offbeat kicks and hand percussion, a funky stomping electric bass guitar pattern with subtle rhythm and note randomisation that sits well with the drum groove to create a tight funky rhythm section, the previously mentioned gated wah guitar pattern in 16ths which provides a modern aggressive edge with KARMA panning, a funky rhythm clean guitar pattern (panned left) which adds a laid back feel to the mix and a sparse punctuated comping electric piano pattern (panned right) with rhythm randomisation. The Fill button provides a syncopated beefy snare and toms fill with variations in all of the scenes.

The LH/KARMA area provides an unobtrusive PWM string pad, while the RH provides two completely different polyphonic voices for soloing and comping, controlled by A.Sw2: an expressive distorted lead guitar (A.Sw2 = off), and a fat brassy polysynth with slight portamento (A.Sw2 = on). A.Sw1 activates waveform, filter and effect modulations for the Bass, Gtr-Wah, Gtr-Strum and E.Piano to provide an alternate tonal variation. In this Performance, the A.Switches are not set to be stored in the scenes, so they can be freely toggled on and off at any time without scene changes affecting them - so you'll find the lead guitar in all scenes.

Right Hand: Distorted lead guitar (A.Sw2 = off)
Fat brassy polysynth (A.Sw2 = on)

Motif Arps/Special Notes
  • Two Motif arps can be added as additional elements: Pads 9 to 12 trigger a funky clavinet pattern (panned right), while Pads 13 to 16 trigger an additional electric piano pattern with distortion* (panned left) - both of which have ascending scale steps based on the last-played chord and can be layered on top of each other. *No distortion on MOX version due to IFX limitations.
  • Switch 7 in the Master RT Control Layer ("Sound [4]") changes the actual voice that is playing the Gtr-Strum so that single note lines can have a plucked muted guitar sound. This is done on the Performance Editor > RT parms > "P" sub-page, in slot #4 by assigning that switch to change the Module's output MIDI channel, thereby sending it to a different part/track in the Yamaha keyboard
  • If you'd like the scene changes to change the lead sound, turn on the "Assignable Switches In Scenes" checkbox under A.Sw2 in the Real-Time Controls page.

Scenes (Master) Description
Scene 1 (simplest) - shakers and congas, bass note every 8 beats, 4 beats alternating pitch-bend note on wah guitar, gtr-strum changes to a plucked mute guitar voice courtesy of Switch 7 in the Master Layer, simple e.piano comp; high-pitched sparse snare and toms fill with tight repeats
Scene 2 (simpler) - shakers and tambourine, bass gets a tiny bit busier, wah guitar starts slow-chopping left/righ, plucked mute guitar plays a different variation, while the e.piano takes the focus with a randomized improvisational ostinato; high-pitched snare and toms 16th-note fill
Scene 3 (simpler) - kick drum and hats are added to percussion, bass picks up a bit more, wah guitar starts a full-on chopping gated pattern, clean guitar plays a single-note melodic line, e.piano plays simple comping chords; snare and toms fill with downwards pitch-bend envelope
Scene 4 (simpler) - dialed down a notch from the startup groove, with the drums on the sidestick, the bass line with more open space in it, the wah guitar doing more syncopated chopping pattern, a simpler clean guitar part, and a more open e.piano part with high octave chords; randomized 8th-notes snare and toms fill
Scene 5 (startup) - funky drum groove with solid kick and snare, punchy randomized bass line, alternating left/right chopping gated wah guitar, funky strummed clean guitar, crunchy e.piano comping; syncpated 8th-notes snare and toms fill
Scene 6 (busier) - drums move to the ride bell, bass picks up the energy with a funkier pattern, the chopping guitar gets more complex, while the clean guitar and e.piano play off each other with busier variations; heavily syncopated snare and toms fill
Scene 7 (busier) - drums breakdown with claps instead of snare and extra percussion, stacatto bass line with open space, chopped guitar adds quick pitch-bend moves, syncopated clean guitar and e.iano comping; wild panning 16th note triplets snare and toms fill
Scene 8 (busiest) - kick-ass variation with heavy low-end on the kick, arpeggiated pitch-bend on the drums, bass line with some open space, alternating up/down pitch-bending wah guitar, busy guitar strum, off-beat simple e.piano chords; wild panning 32nd note snare and toms fill
