For my Girlz 80 BPM - 4/4 Hip-Hop/R&B Lead Synth
hand diagram
This slow-tempo edgy Hip-Hop/R&B Performance has lots of attitude and a contemporary vibe, consisting of a typical laid-back R&B style analog 808 drum groove with claps, triplet hi-hats, electronic percussion and subtle drum hit randomization, a sparse and bright open-filter synth-stack bass pattern, a staccato spikey square-wave synth pattern tuned in 5ths which provides the main melodic focus of the Performance (Synth Riff), a phaser-effected synth-stack chord stab (muted every 1st & 3rd bar) with KARMA panning and rhythm randomization (Synth Stab), and a laid-back muted electric guitar pattern with subtle note randomization which serves to offset the main descending synth riff. A matching analog drum kit fill with many variations is provided for the Fill button. While the startup scene is relatively pop-oriented, some of the other scenes ended up decidedly experimental!

A clean guitar with an auto-wah effect is provided in the LH/KARMA input area, while two different monophonic lead synths are provided in the RH area for soloing, controlled by A.Sw2: a moody dark saw lead with a touch of portamento (A.Sw2 = off), and a brighter rap saw lead with longer release and a more exaggerated portamento (A.Sw2 = on). Use A.Sw1 to kick the leads up an octave and really rip!
Left Hand: Clean guitar with auto-wah effect
Right Hand: Dark saw lead (mono) (A.Sw2 = off)
Rap saw lead (mono) (A.Sw2 = on)

Motif Arps/Special Notes
  • Two Motif arps can be added as additional elements: Pads 9 to 12 trigger a fat & squelchy offbeat resonant synth pattern, while Pads 13 to 16 trigger a pitch-bending koto/ethnic guitar pattern - both of which have ascending scale steps based on the last-played chord and can be layered on top of each other.
  • You'll find the dark lead stored in the odd-numbered scenes and the brighter rap lead in the even-numbered scenes; turn off the "Assignable Switches in Scenes" checkbox under A.Sw2 to keep the currently selected lead sound in all scenes.

Scenes (Master) Description
Scene 1 (simplest) - electronic congas, single bass note every two bars; very sparse synth riff notes and even sparser muted guitar notes while the synth stab takes the focus with a constant rhythmic gated pattern; sparse high-pitched snare and toms fill with echoing repeats
Scene 2 (simpler) - more electronic percussion; bass adds another note to the phrase, the synth riff takes the focus with an insistent variation of the startup phrase, simple synth stabs every other bar while the muted guitar plays echoing octaves and fifths; 8th-note snare and toms fill with tight repeats and downwards pitch envelope ending in SFX
Scene 3 (simpler) - electronic hi-hats and electronic congas, bass adds more notes to the silence, the synth riff plays open spaced notes and the synth stab plays a single note phrase eveyr other bar while the muted guitar takes the focus with a 16th-note ostinato; cascading echoing toms fill with slow downward pitch-bend
Scene 4 (simpler) - the basic startup drums minus the snare and a perc variation; root note stabs on bass, echoing and climbing half-time variation on the synth riff, mono phrase on the synth stab every other bar, simpler echoing muted guitar notes; snare and toms fill with echoing repeats
Scene 5 (startup) - the basic full groove with analog drums and percussion, open-filter stab bass with space, descending 5ths synth riff, synth stab plays chords every other bar, syncopated off-the-downbeat muted guitar; straight snare and toms fill with panning
Scene 6 (busier) - busier drums, more complex analog percussion with clave and electronic bongos, long bass notes with pitch-bend, the synth riff jumps up a fifth and starts on the 7th, synth stab plays the end of every bar now, muted guitar variation on the down-beat; panning 8th-note triplet toms fill - be careful to trigger on the downbeat!
Scene 7 (busier) - drums change kick and snare and add electronic cowbell, octave phrase with bends on the bass, the synth riff jumps to a higher range and doubles up in activity while the synth stab plays a mono phrase with bend every other bar and the guitar plays some plucked chords; panning syncopated 16th-note toms and snare fill
Scene 8 (busiest) - drums change kick and snare and add pitch-bending, heavy dive-bombing bass line, the synth riff plays an off-beat repetitive phrase and the synth stab adds pitch-bedning while the muted guitar does quick 32nd note phrases; panning 8th-note snare and toms fill with 32nd-note repeats
