Meeting Mister X 84 BPM - 4/4 Hip-Hop Keyboard
hand diagram
This slow-tempo Hip-Hop Performance has a cool, sinister vibe due to the two semitone downwards transposition of three Modules in bar 4 of the startup scene. It consists of a solid and traditional hip-hop drum groove with subtle randomized drum hits, a bright yet subsonic phaser-effected synth bass pattern with portamento and lots of attitude, a highly rhythmic and atmospheric gated synth pattern, a harsh and digital sounding HP filter synth stab pattern (Synth 1) which works well rhythmically with the bass, and a pitch-bending square-wave synth riff (Synth 2) heard every other two bars (in the startup scene - turn off Master Layer Switch 5 to hear it all the time). A suitably solid hip-hop snare and toms fill with multiple variations rounds out the ensemble on the Fill button.

The LH/KARMA input area provides an R&B rhodes-style e.piano with tremolo*, while the RH area serves up two different soloing experiences controlled by A.Sw2: a funky polyphonic vintage rhodes-style e.piano with tremolo on the mod wheel and distortion on the ribbon (A.Sw2 = off) and a monophonic huge octaves lead with portamento (A.Sw2 = on) - both of which can be raised up an octave for extended soloing range using A.Sw1. In this Performance, the A.Switches are not set to be stored in the scenes, so they can be freely toggled on and off at any time without scene changes affecting them - so you'll find the e.piano in all scenes. *No tremolo on MOX version due to IFX limitations.
Left Hand: R&B e.piano with tremolo
Right Hand: Vintage e. piano (poly) (A.Sw2 = off)
Huge octaves lead (mono) (A.Sw2 = on)
Split Points: * B2/C3
Motif Arps/Special Notes
  • Two Motif arps can be added as additional hip-hop style elements: Pads 9 to 12 trigger an octaves/fifths pattern on a dancey saw lead, while Pads 13 to 16 trigger an octaves pattern on a resonant hip-hop lead - both of which have ascending scale steps based on the last-played chord and can be layered on top of each other.
  • Turning off Master Layer Switch 6 "Step Transpose Pattern" provides a more musically "neutral" Performance by removing the downward shift by two semitones in bar 4 of the pattern in Modules 3, 4 and 5 - as demonstrated by Scenes 1, 2, 3, 7 and 8.
  • Knob 8 in the Tone 1 Knobs section controls the amount of delay on the Drums/Perc, Fill-Drums and RH lead sounds - turn to max for a trippy beat-synchronized delay effect.

Scenes (Master) Description
Scene 1 (simplest) - congas with arpeggiated pitch-bend, single root notes on the bass every 8 beats, atmospheric gated synth chord every 4 beats, synth 1 takes the focus with a repetitive ostinato while synth 2 plays a complimentary pattern on top; high-pitched snare and toms fill with panning
Scene 2 (simpler) - more congas with arppeggiated pitch-bend with tambourine, double root notes on the bass every 8 beats, gated synth takes the focus with a 3|2 rhythm panning from left to right, synth 1 comps in a higher octave while synth 2 sticks mainly to one lower note; high-pitched snare and toms fill with panning and tight repeats
Scene 3 (simpler) - drums add kick and hi-hats triple root notes on the bass every 8 beats, hlaf-time gated synth rhythm, synth 1 plays a simple comp in lower octave while synth 2 takes the focus with a jittery harmonized line; randomized toms and snare fill with panning
Scene 4 (simpler) - a broken down simplified version of the startup groove with claps instead of snare and less activity in the drums, more space in the bass line, synth 1 and synth 2; simplified hip-hop snare and toms fill with panning
Scene 5 (startup) - the full groove with kick, snare and hi-hats, heavy bass line, centered gated swelling pad, comping metallic synth 1, synth plays the key riff every other 2 bars and bends down; straight hip-hop snare and toms fill
Scene 6 (busier) - drums get busier and add percussion with hand drums, bass gets a bit busier, gated synth changes rhythms and starts slowly panning around, synth 1 plays a more syncopated variation while synth 2 fills in the silence and plays in all bars, bending up in bar 4; panning snare and toms fill with looping upwards pitch-bend envelope
Scene 7 (busiest) - drums move to the ride and add claps and more perc, bass adds a downwards octave bend in each bar, gated synth alternates left and right and transposes an octave in the 4th bar, synth 1 plays a kind of 60's organ riff while synth 2 does a stabbing chordal rhythm every other 2 bars; panning snare and toms fill with looping upwards pitch-bend envelope and tight repeats
Scene 8 (space-out) - not the busiest scene, but a much more open spaced-out variation with a different snare and kick, a bass line with a downwards octave pitch-bend long gated synth chords with pitch-bend, angular synth 1 part with bend and a synth 2 arpeggio every other 2 bars; 16th- note triplet panning snare and toms fill with downwards pitch-bend envelope
