Ribcage Raga 87 BPM - 4/4 Pop/Raga/Dance Woodwind/Reed
hand diagram
This mid-tempo, double drum-kit, Raga-pop style Performance has a definite Indian/World music flavor, not to mention bringing to mind the image of a cartoon character playing mallets on a skeleton's ribcage! It consists of a solid sounding drum groove which is made up from two seperate drum patterns working in parallel (Drums 1 & Drums 2), the first being a straightforward Hip-Hop shuffle groove with congas & maracas, the second being a more laid-back & funky groove with syncopated kick & open-hat, a simple kick-accentuating electric bass guitar pattern, a strummed ethnic guitar pattern suggestive of a shamisen with some delay effect and KARMA panning, and a busy, ethnic-sounding xylophone pattern with lots of room ambience. The Fill button triggers a gated polysynth pattern with velocity controlled filter modulation - different in each scene of course.

The LH/KARMA Input area features an airy motion synth pad, while two different mono synth leads are provided in the right hand span of the keyboard for soloing, controlled by A.Sw2: a chiffy ethnic reed/flute timbre (A.Sw2 = off) and square wave lead with a touch of portamento (A.Sw2 = on). A.Sw1 kicks them both up an octave for an extended soloing range.
Left Hand: Airy motion synth pad
Right Hand: Ethnic reed/flute (mono) (A.Sw2 = off)
Square lead (mono) (A.Sw2 = on)
A.Sw1 = octave up

Motif Arps/Special Notes
  • Two Motif arps can be added as additional elements: Pads 9 to 12 trigger a second ethnic guitar pattern with pitch-bending notes, while Pads 13 to 16 trigger a busy sitar riff - both of which have ascending scale steps based on the last-played chord and shut each other off, courtesy of the Chord Trigger exclusives - try alternating between them, for example, Pad 9 and Pad 13.
  • If you'd like the scene changes to change the lead sound, turn on the "Assignable Switches In Scenes" checkbox under A.Sw2 in the Real-Time Controls page.

Scenes (Master) Description
Scene 1 (simplest) - shaker, triangle and pitch-bend conga, single bass notes, simple notes on the xylophone while the ethnic guitar takes the focus with a panning 16th-note riff; the fill triggers a single note polysynth phrase
Scene 2 (simpler) - more percussion with pitch-bend, doubled notes on bass, single low throbbing strum on the ethnic guitar while the xylophone takes the focus with a bouncing randomized mallet riff with 32nds; fill button triggers a mono polysynth phrase
Scene 3 (simpler) - add kicks to the pitch-bending percussion, octave notes on the bass, panning 16th-note ostinato on the ethnic guitar, double hits on the xylophone; fill button triggers a different mono polysynth phrase
Scene 4 (simpler) - a somewhat more open version of the startup scene, with a full drum groove, open bass notes, panning single note pluck on the ethnic guitar, simpler variation on the xylophone; fill button triggers a syncopated polysynth chord
Scene 5 (startup) - the basic full groove, with a solid funky double-drum kit under-pinning, syncopated single bass notes, panning L/R ethnic guitar strums, and an infectious xylophone riff; gated syncopated polysynth chord fill with some spitting notes depending where you trigger it
Scene 6 (busier) - drums get funkier and add ride, while bass gets busier and more syncopated, as does the ethnic guitar, while the xylophone takes the focus with a riff incorporating some 32nds; gated syncopated polysynth fill variation
Scene 7 (busier) - drums get fatter and looser with open hi-hats, bass adds some syncopated octaves, ethnic guitar and xylophone jump up an octave and change variations; sparser polysynth stabs with wider voicings on the fill
Scene 8 (busiest) - arpeggiated pitch-bending on the drums, bass notes with octave bends, and a busy plucky ethnic guitar line that weaves around with a similar line on the xylophone; spitting gated polysynth fill
