River of Memories 84 BPM - 4/4 World/Ethnic/Pop Woodwind/Reed
hand diagram
This mid-tempo Ethnic Performance features a strong Pop/Rock rhythm section of rock drums and picked electric bass and serves to showcase the improvisational capabilities of KARMA GEs that have a degree of built-in randomization. All of the GEs in this Performance have a degree of rhythm and/or note randomization programmed in, whether subtle (as in the case of the ethnic percussion) or heavy (as in the case of the bass guitar). It consists of a solid half-time rock acoustic drum groove with open hi-hats and tambourine, a busy middle-eastern percussion pattern with a variety of ethnic hand percussion instruments, a slightly funky picked electric bass guitar pattern with an aggressive edge and a fair degree of rhythm and note randomization, a mellow random-panning kalimba pattern and a sparse randomized pizzicato strings chord stab (again with random panning). The Fill button triggers an ethnic guitar (kotoun) arpeggio with different rhythmic and note patterns in each scene.

The LH/KARMA Input area provides a layered flutey synth pad with a slow sweeping phaser effect, while the RH area provides two completely different monophonic soloing experiences, controlled by A.Sw2: an expressive ethnic Ney Flute timbre (A.Sw2 = off) and a dark evocative synth lead with portamento (A.Sw2 = on - be sure to experiment with the ribbon and mod wheel to open up the filter). The odd-numbered scenes call up the ney flute, while the even numbered scenes call up the synth lead.
Left Hand: Syn-flute pad with phaser
Right Hand: Ethnic ney flute (A.Sw2 = off)
Dark evocative synth lead (A.Sw2 = on)

Motif Arps/Special Notes
  • Two Motif arps can be added as additional elements: Pads 9 to 12 trigger an ethnic flute pattern (panned left), while Pads 13 to 16 trigger a sitar pattern (panned right) - both of which have different scale steps based on the last-played chord and can be layered on top of each other.
  • You can store which lead sound you want to use in each scene because the "Assignable Switches In Scenes" checkbox is on under A.Sw2 in the Real-Time Controls Editor - it is stored as the ethnic ney flute in the odd-numbered scenes. Turn this off if you'd like the lead to stay the same over scene changes.

Scenes (Master) Description
Scene 1 (simplest) - congas with arpeggiated pitch-bend create a percolating effect within a sparse ethnic perc part, double bass accents with wide open space, extremely sparse kalimba riff, occasional pizzicato stabs; 8th-note ethnic guitar fill with pitch-bend
Scene 2 (simpler) - shakers and tambourice along with busier ethnic perc pattern, more bass notes including some with slides, wider range and busier kalimba riff, while the pizzicato takes the focus with an insistent rhythm of triads; descending syncopated ethnic guitar fill
Scene 3 (simpler) - kick and hi-hats added to the perc and ethnic perc, open bass line variation, kalimba riff takes the focus with a higher range rhythm with some 32nd rolls while the pizzicato simplifies with a lower single note phrase; ascending 16th-note ethnic guitar fill
Scene 4 (simpler) - basically, a more wide open version of the start up scene, with the drums on sidestick, and more open space in the bass, kalimba and pizzicato parts; descending 16th-note ethnic guitar fill (alternate pattern)
Scene 5 (startup) - rock drums with randomization, ethnic percussion and hand drums, funky picked bass with randomization, randomized kalimba and pizzicato stabs play off each other; descending 16th-note ethnic guitar fill
Scene 6 (busier) - different snare and cowbell added, a little busier on the ethnic perc, bass gets a little more syncopated, much busier kalimba with octave repeats, single note pizzicato riffs instead of chords; fast descending triplet ethnic guitar fill
Scene 7 (busier) - offbeat snare variation with ride cymbals and congas, ethnic percussion with arpeggiated pitch-bend, alternate bass line with 7ths, kalimba plays a repating riff with harmony while wide pizzicato chords stab randomly; fast ascending triplet ethnic guitar fill
Scene 8 (busiest) - arpeggiated pitch-bend on the drums and ethnic percussion for a heavy effect, open space in the bass riff for a breakdown effect, octave bouncing kalimba clusters, jittery schizophrenic doubled pizzicato riff; fast decending triplet ethnic guitar fill with alternate note pattern
