Saxy Swinger 103 BPM - 6/4 Jazz/Big-Band Bell/Mallet
hand diagram
This mid-tempo big-band Jazz Performance features a heavy 6/4 swing feel inspired by the song "Bitches Crystal" from progressive rock giants Emerson, Lake & Palmer's classic album Tarkus (1971). It consists of a ride-cymbal driven swinging jazz groove on acoustic drums with subtle randomized snare drum dynamics, a busy 'walking' electric vintage jazz-bass guitar pattern with subtle note randomization, an offbeat jazz piano comp which chugs along nicely with the bass guitar pattern, a left-panned jazz guitar pattern with randomized notes which offsets the jazz piano comp to provide an extra rhythmic layer, and a melodic big-band sax ensemble riff with randomized rhythm and notes. A jazzy toms fill with persistent ride cycmbal compliments the drum groove on the Fill button.

A vibraphone (poly) with tremolo on the mod wheel is provided in the right hand span of the keyboard for soloing, which can be switched to an alto saxophone (mono) by A.Sw1 (which is not stored in the scenes, so you can change to the sax at any time.) A softer acoustic piano is provided in the LH area for comping and providing chords.
Left Hand: Acoustic piano
Right Hand: Vibraphone (poly) (A.Sw1 = off)
Vibrato alto sax (mono) (A.Sw1 = on)
Split Points: * B2/C3
Motif Arps/Special Notes
  • Two Motif arps can be added as additional elements: Pads 9 to 12 trigger a stabbing jazz organ pattern, while Pads 13 to 16 trigger a one-shot jazz organ slide - both of which have ascending scale steps based on the last-played chord and can be layered on top of each other. Try triggering Pad 9, and then while that is looping, interjecting Pads 13 to 16 on top of it. Note that since Pads 13 to 16 are not latched in the Chord Trigger Editor (or in the Yamaha arp settings), you purposely need to hold them down to play the full slide, while you can tap them to get stacatto chords.
  • Turning off Master Switch 3 can provide a more musically "neutral" Performance in some scenes.

Scenes (Master) Description
Scene 1 (simplest) - shaker, single open notes on bass with pitch-bend, arpeggios on the piano and guitar that intertwine and harmonize with each other, simple motif on the saxes; high-pitched panning snare and toms fill with repeats
Scene 2 (simpler) - ride cymbals and congas, simple supporting bass line, comping chords in higher octaves on the piano while the guitar plays an octaves comping pattern, saxes play a sort of echoing line; high-pitched panning snare and toms fill with tight repeats
Scene 3 (simpler) - ride cymbals, pedal hat and shaker, bass doubles up the activity from previous scene, piano does off-beat comping while guitar plays an ascending syncopated motif with some subtle bending, and a stabbing staccato octaves riff on the saxes; snare and toms fill with pitch-bend ending in vibraslap
Scene 4 (simpler) - simpler variation of startup groove with less snare, open spaces in the bass line, simpler comping in the piano and guitar parts, and a more open syncopated saxe riff; slightly less busy randomized snare and toms fill
Scene 5 (startup) - the basic full groove: swinging 6/4 ride-cymbal drum groove, walking bass line, off-beat jazz piano comp and complimentary guitar comp, big band sax riff in unison with randomizations to keep it fresh; randomized snare and toms fill
Scene 6 (busier) - drums add congas, bass changes to a more driving walking bass line, guitar plays an octave comping pattern, piano plays some bouncing clusters, saxes play an ensemble chordal pattern; randomized snare and toms fill
Scene 7 (alternate variation) - drums go to the hi-hats and add backbeats, bass introduces some rests for a more open feel, piano and guitar play simpler chords that play off of each other, saxes play a sort of echoing line; randomized snare and toms fill with panning
Scene 8 (alternate variation) - syncopated variation with heavy percussion, syncopated bass line, off-beat piano with high clusters, a melodic soloing riff on the guitar, and a stabbing staccato octaves riff on the saxes; randomized snare and toms fill with panning and pitch-bend
