Step On Up! 125 BPM - 4/4 UK Garage/2 Step Lead Synth
hand diagram
This up-tempo UK Garage/2 Step Performance features a distinctive KARMA pitch-bending synth riff on top of a syncopated groove consisting of a busy drum machine style drum groove with off-beat snare and congas, a kick-accentuating resonant square-wave synth bass pattern, a panning synth arpeggio with built-in KARMA envelopes for filter cutoff and volume, and a gated techno-style synth pattern with KARMA panning. The Fill button provides a complimentary snare and toms fill with layered percussion and different variations in the scenes.

The LH/KARMA area provides a fat sawtooth synth pad, while the RH provides two completely different soloing experiences, controlled by A.Sw2: a monophonic rising mini moog lead with a hint of distortion* (A.Sw2 = off), and a monophonic distorted guitar lead (A.Sw2 = on). A.Sw1 transposes both leads up an octave for extended soloing range. You'll find that the odd-numbered scenes call up the synth lead while the even-numbered scenes call up the guitar lead - courtesy of the "Assignable Switches In Scenes" checkbox. *Not in MOX version due to IFX limitations.
Left Hand: Sawtooth synth pad
Right Hand: Rising mini moog lead (mono) (A.Sw2 = off)

Motif Arps/Special Notes
  • Two Motif arps can be added as additional elements: Pads 9 to 12 trigger a simple bell-pad phrase with long sustained notes (panned left), while Pads 13 to 16 trigger a busy syncopated sync-wave riff (panned right) - both of which have ascending scale steps based on the last-played chord and can be layered on top of each other.
  • Tone Adjust Knob 8 adds beat-synchronized delays to the drums, drum fill, synth bass and gated synth.
  • This Performance is purposely rather busy - try muting Module 3 Synth Riff in various scenes (or turn off the Run button in the Main Window Status area) to open a lot more room for soling.
  • Unlike most Performances, the Bass, Synth Riff and Arpeggio Modules use the "Root Position" checkbox in the Performance Editor > Control page, so that even when playing inversions of chords in the LH, the bass and tonality tracks the root of the chord - the first eight Chord Trigger buttons demonstrate this nicely. If you'd like the moduls to perform bass-leading instead (follow the low note of inversions), turn off "Root Position."

Scenes (Master) Description
Scene 1 (simplest) - shaker and hand drum with arpeggiated pitch-bend, simple root note on bass, the arpeggio takes the focus with a left/right panning hypnotic 16th-note ostinato while the synth riff plays a simple octaves riff and the gated synth injects a few sparse chords; slow snare and toms fill with panning and pitch-bend envelope
Scene 2 (simpler) - shakers with arpeggiated pitch-bend, doubled note on root and fifth on bass, the synth riff takes the focus with an intricate chopping and harmonizing pattern caused by cascading melodic repeats, while the arpeggio does some left/right single note echoes and the gated synth does some sparse long chords with pitch-bend; panning snare and toms fill with pitch-bend envelope and tight repeats
Scene 3 (simpler) - drums add hand drums, claps, hi-hats and rides, simple bass line on root, gated synth takes the focus with an octave jumping rhythmic pattern while the synth riff plays simple short stabs and the arpeggio fades in a short melody alternating left/right; panning snare and toms fill with repeats
Scene 4 (simpler) - a more open version of the startup scene, with simplified drums, greatly simplified bass line, simplified synth riff, slower arpeggio, more space in the gated synth part; more open snare and toms fill
Scene 5 (startup) - the basic full groove, syncopated drums with off-beat snare and percussion, simple kick-accenting square wave bass, a very distinctive synth riff takes the melodic focus while the arpeggio fades in left and right and the gated synth sprinkles some chopped chords left and right as well; randomized snare and toms fill
Scene 6 (busier) - drums add ride cymbal and additional percussion, bass gets a bit busier, the synth riff does a completely different rising motif while the arpeggio plays a slower fade-in riff in harmony and the gated synth jumps up an octave; snare and toms fill with panning
Scene 7 (busiest) - drums switch to ride bell and trade bongos for congas, bass adds more notes and some pitch-bend, the synth riff inverts to doing a descending syncopated randomized melody, while the arpeggio does two-note left/right fanfares and the gated synth does a steady chopping rhythm; syncopated snare and toms fill
Scene 8 (breakdown) - a completely different direction with the drums in half-time, a very randomized bass line, the synth riff slowed down to longer sustained notes while the arpeggio does left/right three-note chords and the gated synth pans left and right and jumps octaves; panning syncopated snare and toms fill with downwards pitch-bend envelope and repeats
