The Inside Story 120 BPM - 4/4 Orchestral Strings
hand diagram
This mid-tempo orchestral Performance has a bold and urgent attack vibe, acting as the perfect template for the theme music to a current affairs program or breaking news bulletin! It consists of a marching orchestral drums and percussion pattern that includes orchestral snare with rolls, concert bass drum and timpani, a punctuating ensemble bass pattern with subtle note randomization that accentuates the timpani, a rhythmically strident arco strings pattern with chords and single notes, a busy woodwinds and brass layer phrase (Brass 1) with subtle note randomization that provides the main melodic focus and a sparse orchestral brass stab pattern (Brass 2) that helps to reinforce the rest of the mix. The Fill button triggers a swooping strings and brass layer phrase with different variations in the scenes, while temporarily stopping the Strings, Brass 1 and Brass 2 phrases.

A warm brass and string layer is provided in the LH/KARMA Input area, while the RH area of the keyboard provides two different orchestral voices for soloing, controlled by A.Sw 2: aggressive strings (A.Sw2 = off) and orchestral brass (A.Sw2 = on). A.Sw 1 accentuates the attack of both voices, and you will find that both switches have been assigned to have their settings stored in the scenes in various combinations.
Left Hand: Warm Brass/String Layer*
(*Strings only MOX version)
Right Hand: Aggressive Strings (A.Sw 2 = off)
Orchestral Brass (A.Sw2 = on)
Split Points: * B2/C3
Motif Arps/Special Notes
  • Unlike most Performances where arps are added as additional elements, Pads 9 to 12 trigger single notes of a Glockenspiel to add to the mix, while Pads 13 to 16 do the same for Tubular Bells. The notes are based on scale steps of the Last Played Chord (of course), so they will always fit the music.
  • The Fill-Riff mutes three different Modules in this Performance (Strings, Brass 1 and Brass 2) courtesy of the "Cutoff Other Modules" settings on the Performance Editor > Trigger Page (after which they are retriggered at the end of the fill by the "Retrigger At End" settings of the Fill-Stop Page).

Scenes (Master) Description
Scene 1 (simplest) - tambourine, very open basses pattern with a lot of space, simple fifths rhythm on arco strings, scalic melody on strings and woodwinds with the brass ensemble providing a downward counterpoint; fill button triggers a staccato brass/strings line
Scene 2 (simpler) - orchestral snare added to the tambourine, more activity in the basses, arco strings keep up the fifths rhythm, brass and woodings play a simple two note alterating phrase while the brass ensemble takes focus with a long riff ending in stabbing chords; fast staccato 16th-notes fill
Scene 3 (simpler) - strident march-like variation adds tympani, simpler basses, strident arco strings, driving 8th-note brass and woodwind chords, and sparse notes and chords from the brass ensemble; brass/strings fill variation with some extended notes in the phrase
Scene 4 (simpler) - a simplified version of the startup Scene 5, with more space in all of the parts; inverted brass/strings fill variation
Scene 5 (startup) - the basic full groove: heavy orchestral drums and snares, punctuating basses, strident arco strings, fanfare like brass and woodwinds, stabbing chords from brass ensemble; fill button triggers a doubled/strings brass phrase
Scene 6 (busier) - more complex drums adding tambourine, busier basses variation, more notes from arco strings and brass and woodwinds, stabbing brass ensemble chords; fill button triggers the doubled strings/brass phrase in octaves
Scene 7 (busier) - drums add more cymbal crashes, syncopated basses variation, bouncing arco strings pattern with space, single high notes melody on brass and woodwinds, simple two-note stabs from brass ensemble; simpler brass/strings fill variation
Scene 8 (breakdown) - a more electronic variation, with pitch-bending on the orchestral drums and crashes, more space in the basses and arco strings, an upwards cascading scale on the brass and woodwinds and falls on the bass ensemble; triplets brass/strings fill
