A Distant Mirage 90 BPM - 4/4 World/Ethnic Woodwind/Reed
hand diagram
This mid-tempo World/Ethnic style Performance has a definite Middle-Eastern flavour (although certain elements and instruments used in the mix originate in Africa). It consists of a percussion pattern of Udu drum (one of the aforementioned African instruments) with conga and shakers (Perc 1), a second percussion pattern featuring a selection of Arabic percussion instruments and tambourine (Perc 2), a busy Kalimba (or African thumb piano) pattern with random panning, a rhythmic ethnic guitar strum pattern with a sound similar to a strummed Bouzouki and a simple atmospheric melodic pattern played by a bell/pad layer. The Fill button triggers a flute arpeggio (with wave-sequenced flute samples) that mutes the Bell/Pad melody in its duration.

Unlike most of the factory Performances, there is no bass in this one - you play the bass yourself on the lower octave(s) of the keyboard - the first 8 Chord Triggers have a bass note stored with the input notes to KARMA by way of example. Both the LH synth pad and bass can be latched with the sustain pedal. A chiffy flute is provided in the right hand span of the keyboard for those ethnic melodies you have locked inside - however, the split point has been moved up an octave from the usual place so that two octaves are available for the KARMA Input area - the flute is played from C4 and up, and can be transposed up an octave using A.Sw1.
Left Hand: C2 ~ B3: Synth pad
B1 and down: Synth bass
Right Hand: Chiffy flute (mono)
A.Sw1 = octave; A.Sw2 = chiff
Split Points: * C2 ~ B3: KARMA Input Zones

C4 and up: RH lead
B1 and down: LH bass
Motif Arps/Special Notes
  • Two Motif arps can be added as additional elements: Pads 9 to 12 trigger an additional ethnic flute pattern, while Pads 13 to 16 trigger an ethnic sounding string riff - both of which have ascending scale steps based on the last-played chord and can be layered on top of each other.
  • The first five Rhythm Multiplier switches in the Master Layer can create many additional starting points for variations that were not used in the factory scenes.
  • The RH flute is stored with the chiffy A.Sw2 effect on in Scenes 5 to 8, and off in Scenes 1 to 4 - courtesy of the "Assignable Switches in Scenes" checkbox under A.Sw2 in the RTC Editor.

Scenes (Master) Description
Scene 1 (simplest) - sparse ethnic percussion, simple kalimba pattern with bend, a few plucked notes on the ethnic guitar, simple two-note bell pattern; low percussive flute fill
Scene 2 (simpler) - more percussion added, focus on the descending bell pattern, ethnic guitar with bend, sparse kalimba; single note percussive flute fill
Scene 3 (simpler) - percussion variations, focus now on the ethnic gtr pattern, simple two-note bell pattern, low kalimba notes; echoing flute fill
Scene 4 (simpler) - a simpler, more open variation of the startup scene, with more space in all parts; faster ascending fluttering flute fill
Scene 5 (startup) - the basic full groove; ascending triplets flute fill
Scene 6 (busier) - variations in both perc parts, the bells riff becomes longer with more notes, kalimba pattern becomes tighter; randomized flute fill
Scene 7 (busiest) - perc variations, the bells play a chord with a long bend, the ethnic guitar starts picking as well as strumming, kalimba up an octave; faster ascending flute till
Scene 8 (breakdown) - a very different sounding variation, with arpeggiated pitch-bending on both drum modules, a low octaves ostinato on the ethnic gtr, suspended scalic chords from the bells; very fast fluttery flute fill
