R&B with a Sting 92 BPM - 4/4 R&B Lead Synth
hand diagram
This mellow mid-tempo R&B Performance features finger-picked acoustic guitar, influenced by singer/songwriter Sting's soulful pop ballads. It consists of a slightly funky drum groove with claps and subtle record-scratching, a simple kick accentuating muted electric bass pattern, an atmospheric gated synth pattern with a slowly opening filter, the previously mentioned fingerpicked acoustic guitar with random velocity for a very realistic fingerpicked style, and a simple comping acoustic piano pattern with lots of space. The Fill button provides a matching snare and acoustic toms fill with a number of variations in the scenes.

A lush analog string pad is provided in the LH/KARMA area, while a warm RnB mono synth lead with slight portamento is provided in the RH area for soloing. A.Sw2 adds a second oscillator to the lead down a fourth and brightens it slighty, and the Performance is set to store that setting in the scenes - you will find that it is on in Scenes 6 & 8 - and listen out for Scene 8 with its cool double-time pitch-bending drum groove!

Right Hand: Warm RnB synth lead (mono)

Split Points: * B2/C3
Motif Arps/Special Notes
  • Two Motif arps can be added as additional elements: Pads 9 to 12 trigger an echoing dotted-16ths chord, while Pads 13 to 16 trigger a synth flute pattern - both of which have ascending scale steps based on the last-played chord and can be layered on top of each other to really fill up the mix.
  • A.Sw1 activates a lengthening of the AEG on the Gated Synth (Module 3); A.Sw2 adds a second oscillator down a fourth to the RH synth lead and brightens it slightly - note that the settings of A.Sw2 have been set to be stored in the scenes (it's on in scenes 6 and 8) while the settings of A.Sw1 are not. This is controlled by the "Assignable Switches In Scenes" checkboxes beneath the A. Switch settings in the Real-Time Control page.

Scenes (Master) Description
Scene 1 (simplest) - minimal activity with shakers, sparse bass and piano notes, a simple two-note guitar riff, with the focus on an ascending L/R alternating synth riff; high-pitched panning fill ending in open triangle
Scene 2 (simpler) - congas, triangle and clave percussion, the piano takes focus with a nice ostinato pattern that intertwines with the synth riff variation; high-pitched panning snare and toms fill
Scene 3 (simpler) - a more laid-back variation of the startup scene with kick, sidestick and scratches, bass adds some notes from the previous scene, introspective piano pattern; pitch-bending panning snare and toms fill ending in vibraslap
Scene 4 (startup) - the basic full groove; straight snare and toms fill
Scene 5 (busier) - the bass line gets funkier, the guitar reverses picking direction, the gated synth does a busier pattern, the piano gets busier; straight snare and toms fill with slow delays
Scene 6 (busier) - drums switch to sidestick and rides; bass variation, gated synth switches to higher single-note pattern, half-time guitar pattern, piano comp variation; panning snare and toms fill
Scene 7 (busier) - syncopated drum variation with cowbell and analog toms, funky bass, piano moves to a reggae phrasing guitar phrase with open space; gated synth chords, rising pitch-bending panning toms and snare fill
Scene 8 (busiest) - cool double-time pitch-bending drum groove, bending bass line, finger-picking guitar, comping piano, gated chords; rising pitch-bending fill withe fast delays
