What can I do with it?
  • With KARMA Oasys Software (KO) running on your PC/Mac, you get complete access to every feature of the powerful KARMA engine, not just the part that is brought to the surface in the keyboard.
  • Use KO's powerful graphical interface to discover and manipulate every nuance of the KARMA Function within your Programs and Combis. Whether you're creating sounds from scratch or using the factory sounds, KO's visual controls and displays provide the ultimate insight into the amazing world of KARMA.
  • Experiment and explore the KARMA Function in ways that are impossible on the OASYS alone. KARMA Oasys is the ultimate learning tool for anyone who wants to better understand the KARMA Function.
  • Operate the KARMA Software as an additional 6 modules at the same time as using the 4 modules of the internal KARMA Function in the OASYS, for up to 10 modules – it's like having two and a half OASYS's at once!
  • Venture into the heart of KARMA and develop your own Generated Effects (GE's) for unlimited musical possiblities. Import .MID files and grab phrases directly from the OASYS sequencer, and instantly turn them into GEs. Then, upload (via SysEx) your new GE's to the OASYS and take them on the road!
  • KARMA Oasys provides some additional features not found in the OASYS, such as 32 Scenes per Module per Performance (instead of 8), 16 Chord Trigger Buttons (Pads) per Performance instead of 8, the ability to give each Module and Scene a descriptive name, and more. These features cannot be imported into the OASYS, but are available while using the software.

KARMA Oasys Features
KARMA Oasys software runs on your PC/Mac and communicates with
your Korg OASYS via a standard MIDI Interface connection.
  • Complete access to the 400+ parameters making up a KARMA GE (Generated Effect). These parameters are mostly hidden in the OASYS with a maximum of 32 being available (per GE), but you can view and edit all of them using the software, along with the Performance parameters associated with each KARMA Module.
  • Graphical editing and creation of Drum Patterns, Rhythm Patterns, Duration Patterns, Index Patterns, Cluster Patterns, Velocity Patterns, CC Patterns, Wave-Sequence Patterns, Envelopes, Note Maps, and more!
  • Create new GEs, and edit existing GEs into new configurations. Download the GEs to the OASYS via MIDI SysEx Dump, or via export to a .KGE file.
  • One-step MIDI (SysEx) upload/download of Programs and Combis.

  • Import phrases and drum grooves from the OASYS's internal sequencer, or from any .MID source (such as external sequencers) and transform them into KARMA GEs. Automatically assign GE Parameters and RTC Models and instantly begin varying your phrase in the amazingly interactive KARMA manner.
  • Captivating, real-time visual display of the generated MIDI data.
  • Popup tooltips and context-sensitive Help provide comprehensive documentation of all features.
  • Available for both Mac OS X and Windows. See Minimum System Requirements.

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)
• What is KARMA?
KARMA® (Kay Algorithmic Realtime Music Architecture) is a patented algorithmic MIDI data generating technology that takes input notes and controller movements and generates complex musical phrases and effects. KARMA provides independent real-time control over various aspects of a musical phrase, such as rhythm, duration, accents, chord density, pitch bending, tonal variation, panning, repeats, randomization, etc. Some people refer to it as "an arpeggiator on steroids," although even that description doesn't do it justice. It's simply the most advanced music generation technology available!

More Info - (Long Description)
• What is KARMA Oasys?
• It's an editing environment for KARMA, and the KARMA function as it is implemented on the Korg OASYS. It allows access to all of the 400+ parameters of a GE, most of which are not editable on the keyboard itself, along with all of the Program/Combi parameters that directly relate to the KARMA Function.

• It's a way to create entirely new GEs, or edit existing GEs, and store them on the computer or send them to the keyboard's memory. You may create them from scratch (by setting parameters), or by importing simple phrases or sequences of notes from the keyboard's internal sequencer (or an external sequencer).

• It's the same programming tool that the Korg Voicing Team Members used to create all of the original presets in the OASYS. And actually, it has additional features such as the .MID Phrase import ("Import To GE" Editor) that weren't available during the factory voicing.

• It's a software version of the KARMA function of the keyboard. In other words, it's not a simple SysEx editor for the KARMA parameters, it's the whole engine in software form. You use it *instead* of the KARMA function on the keyboard, or potentially combine them for a total of up to 10 modules of KARMA activity.

• It's a way of visualizing and understanding the workings of the KARMA function and technology, whether you want to create anything new or not. Looking at the various pattern grids of a GE in KO provides visual feedback you cannot get on the OASYS.
• What is KARMA Oasys *not*?
• It's *not* a librarian for the OASYS. It contains some librarian-like features, but it does not in its present form take the place of a dedicated librarian.

• It's *not* a graphical editor for all of the many synthesizer parameters of the OASYS, such as the Program Filter envelopes, LFOs, IFX and MFX, or for the Sequencer section etc. It is a graphical editor for the KARMA function *only*, which is a smaller (yet complex) dedicated subset of all of the parameters that make up the Korg OASYS.

• It's *not* a simple SysEx editor for a MIDI device, the way many manufacturers hand out editors for their devices. It's the complete KARMA engine in software form. This program existed *before* the Korg OASYS, and the keyboard's implementation was derived from the program, not vice versa. So even as far as the KARMA function goes, it's not an exact graphical representation of the function as it exists in the keyboard. Certain parameters are grouped differently, for example. However, anything you create in KARMA Oasys can be exported and loaded directly into the keyboard (with the exception of settings that do not exist - for example, KO allows you to create up to 32 scenes per Module, but only the first 8 scenes can be transferred to the OASYS).

• It's *not* intended for use with other MIDI devices unless you have an OASYS. In other words, if you have a multi-port setup with a few different devices, you can select another synth as an output device provided your OASYS is still connected to the software's Global Ports. You can also send KARMA's output through Virtual Interapplication Ports to communicate with other applications, such as a computer-based sequencing programs and soft synths. But unless you have an OASYS, the program will not generate MIDI.
• Can I record the results of the KARMA generation?

Yes, the impressive results generated by KARMA Oasys can be recorded either as audio or as MIDI data.

First, you can always just record the audio of your OASYS the same way you always do. KARMA Oasys generates MIDI, sends it to the OASYS, and you simply record the audio outputs of the OASYS into whatever audio recording device you normally use. It then becomes a track of audio data that you use in your project along with other audio tracks.

Secondly, the MIDI data generated by KARMA Oasys can be recorded into the internal OASYS sequencer, or external software sequencers such as Sonar, DP, Logic, and Cubase (using Virtual Interapplication Ports). You can then route the output of KARMA directly into your software-based sequencing program - the MIDI data can then be played back, edited, overdubbed etc. and become part of your project, while you use KARMA Oasys to generate other parts.

• Can I use KARMA Oasys with other synths and soft synths?
Yes, but only if you actually have a Korg OASYS connected to the software. The OASYS must be located on the global port settings. Then, you can send the algorithmic effects being generated by KARMA to any device that is part of your MIDI setup. By using KO's Virtual Ports, you can also control many soft synths and audio generating programs such as Reason.
• I don't have an OASYS - are there different versions created for use with other keyboards?
Yes! Please visit the KARMA Software page. There are also versions for the Korg M3, Korg M50, and Korg Kronos, as well as legacy versions for the Korg Triton and Korg Karma - and a version that supports multiple Yamaha instruments.
• What kind of sounds does it come with - and are there more?
KARMA Oasys comes with a data file containing the entire factory voicing of the final OASYS 1.3.3 update, and all available options, ready for you to begin experimenting with, modifying and creating new GEs - now that you can see into the hidden workings of KARMA.

And if you feel you've exhausted the possibilities there or just want more, several of Karma-Lab's extremely popular add-on sound sets are available in KARMA Oasys versions - a slew of additional Combis that are even more focused on grooves and song ideas.
• Is there a demo version I can try out?
Not at the moment, but we may be producing one in the future.
• Can I look at the manual and documentation before I buy it?
Yes, by going to the KARMA Oasys Documentation page.
• Where can I purchase KARMA Oasys, and how much does it cost?
You can purchase KARMA Oasys directly from us at the Karma-Lab Store. Please check the store for the current price and any special promotional offers. The software is sold as a downloadable electronic version only (international customers) or your choice of a downloadable or physical CD package (USA only).
• Is the software copy-protected?
Yes - it is protected with a Challenge/Response authorization. This means that the program generates a unique code when it first opens, you register the code with us online, we send you back a response code, you enter the code, and your software is authorized on that particular computer. If you need to authorize it again (which may happen if you reformat your hard drive, re-install your OS, get a new computer etc.), you contact us and we give you a new code. For more information on the authorization process, including how to authorize a non-internet capable computer, see this document:

How To Authorize KARMA Oasys.pdf
• Can I install the software on more than one computer?
Yes - The license allows the software to be installed and authorized on two computers owned and operated by a single user (i.e. a desktop and a laptop), provided only one is in use at a given time. If you require more than the two authorizations provided for, we will be happy to work with you to arrive at a solution.
• When I order the software, it asks me to choose an Operating System - does this lock me into a single OS?
No - the OS selection option on the store page serves two purposes: 1) to let us know what the user's main OS is, and 2) to make sure that the user is aware of which operating systems are actually available. Once you have ordered and are sent to the download page, you can download whichever OS you want from the full list of available operating system installers. If you choose to order the CD-ROM option (USA only), all of the installers for all operating systems are included on the CD.
• When I order the download option, how quickly is it delivered?
The download link for the software package will be sent to you as soon as a human reads the order. This can be within an hour, or sometimes not until the next day - it all depends what time it is and where you are in the world. We are a small company and do not (yet) have automated delivery methods. But we do check the orders all day (7 days a week), not just normal working hours, so you will get it in most cases within a few hours.
• Where can I get some more information or ask questions?
The Karma Lab Oasys Forum is a good place to find out about KARMA Oasys and the OASYS. Ask a question in the new KARMA Oasys Software section. You can also send an e-mail to: info@karma-lab.com.
